Mag 7.9 earthquake strikes Turkey, surrounding countries.

Sadly no any surprise here. No any lesson has been learned from the '99 Marmara quake.
The AKP government collected truck loads of money as "earthquake tax" and "earthquake insurance" for years, spent to flashy but useless shit instead. Replaced educated, practised people in every position with dumb, greedy but loyal ones. Declared major zoning amnesties nine times for buildings violating any zoning laws, just to get more votes. Areas designated to use in case of emergencies such as this has been filled with malls and condos.

I'm sorry, give me all the negrates, but as an autistic Californian I could literally not give a fuck about the ground shaking.

The deaths? Yeah. Absolutely sucks people died. May Allah or God or whatever their region believes in bless them. But I'm pretty sure

pretty sure that the Turks had had this problem in recent memory, so any sympathy I would have for them would be forgotten as quickly as what they had for dinner three days after 9/11.

And before you go "oh well you've never been in one" I was in Loma Prieta and lost a single can of Spaghetti-O's.:semperfidelis: Semper fi, you brave Italian bastard. Pvt. Boiardi will always be remembered.
for all the shit we rightly give calivornians, they went ham after the fourth or fifth quake rocked their world and actually bothered fixing shit, both seismic retrofitting of buildings (and tearing down some shit ones) and massive reinforcement of bridges (they're designed to slip on top of the pillars instead of just being really fucking big)

The moment of earthquake.

Aftershocks are powerful enough to level damaged buildings.

From all those videos of buildings just collapsing it looks like we won't see a final death count for awhile. We might have a 5 figure death count from this.
It’s unthinkable it would be less than five figures. Buildings are still collapsing and earthquakes keep happening over and over, there have now been two over mag 7 and lots of large after shocks.

It’s also cold, so trapped people won’t have a ton of time to be rescued.

The 1999 earthquake killed ~18000 people and this is worse by all measures.

True. If that was me, though (like, if I was someone in an apt building in the affected area), after watching 1 building collapse, I’d be afraid my building was next and get the hell out of there. surely lots of other people think like that and are doing the same? Especially with the multiple and ongoing aftershocks.

I don’t even know what people are supposed to do. All buildings should be considered dangerous if not outright deadly in the affected areas now, aftershocks keep collapsing them.

There’s absolutely nowhere safe, but they have to go somewhere since it’s too cold to stay outside long term.

People always say roaches will survive nuclear Armageddon. Maybe they will survive the blasts and radiation but falling debris seems to kill them all the same.

Damage, panic and first rescue efforts right after the earthquake.
