It's because over the last few years they've built JK Rowling up as the equivalent of Terf Hitler.

She's a woman, so a lot of them hate her for being something they will never be. She's super-rich and can't be cancelled, so they have zero power over her - that in itself is a big cause of rage for these people. Many of them were Harry Potter fans before she came out as "gender critical" (i.e. holding perfectly normal, majority beliefs), so they see it as some kind of betrayal. She has a huge following on Twitter, so her tweets get seen by a lot of people.

A lot of them exist in echo chambers full of people who are all saying she's evil incarnate, that she literally wants trans people dead, that she's racist, etc. etc., so they get radicalised over time and this is the end result.

Also, it's easy for these people to be "online activists". They can organise a raid on a Discord server, or a Twitch streamer, but they won't leave their houses en masse and go and protest the so-called "anti-trans bills" they claim are literally going to genocide them out of existence. Far easier to attack a middle-aged woman whose views are really not extreme at all.

They're just making themselves look like cunts though. Spoiling the game for people who want to enjoy it is a bit like those environmental activists who block traffic and stop people getting to work - even people sympathetic to their cause get pissed off by them.

It has occurred to me that they target the game and the game players because all the other HP properties are enjoyed by more normies than they could ever hope to badger, harass, and abuse. Gamers are popular punching bags for lying narcissists. If they tried going after the families that go to Harry Potter World, read the books, watch the movies, and anything other than play videogames, they know they wouldn't stand a chance at stopping anything. I've heard it's quite a common trait among mentally ill people to assign all the problems in their lives to external tormentors - it's a weird kind of comfort, in a way, to think that there's some shadowy bogeyman out there that's the architect of all their pain, and it also absolves them of any personal responsibility for their current status.

I think for a lot of the terminally online ones, it's about trying to win whatever is the current online battle. They just go with the flow. Apologising and pandering to them is like deliberately cutting yourself and drawing blood in front of a bunch of sharks. It's pointless, cos it just shows them that you're weak. They're not about to forgive you. There is no path to forgiveness.

I've followed enough troon lolcows to say this is true. Eleanor Amaranth Lockhart (aka Luke) is one of my favorite thread arcs. He was a tenure track professor and gave it up. He went trans to solve his problems and then kept inventing new problems. He swore that the creator of Night In The Woods videogame ruined his life, because when Luke wrote a bad take article about how the progressive game was actually offensive to him, he got mocked relentlessly and the creator of the game didn't step forward and save him. He spent literal years constantly bringing that game and the creator up, like it was a tormentor following him his entire life.

He had other examples too, his parents paid for his surgeries and transition shit but he still constantly complained about his dad not being accepting enough online. There was someone that bullied him in highschool or something similar that he absolutely never forgave even after the bully died young, posting about how much the bullying ruined his life after the guy was already dead. Persecution complexes and evil groups holding them from happiness are shackles, but as long as they think they have shackles they can summon the willpower to live on and fight against them.

Sometimes it doesn't even need to be a group but just a concept, Luke ran the whole treadmill that leads to "becoming a girl" to find happiness and when that didn't work the goalposts moved. He needed vocal training, he needed lots of hormones, he needed bottom surgery, he got it all and moved on to the next thing he needed to be happy. Eventually moving to a big city is what he needed, and then getting a tech job was what he needed. I'm pretty sure it just turned out that what he needed was to get off the internet, because eventually he started lashing out at other trannies on twitter about how they made him lose years of potential happy life to fear that death squads would come for him under Trump (which obviously didn't happen), and he came to the conclusion himself that the cycle was destructive and got off twitter. He might still be chasing the next thing he needs to be happy and might still blame an indie dev for his life being bad, but at least now he isn't doing it publicly in a death spiral on twitter all day long.
