PORTLAND, Ore. — Jared Walter, the convicted sex offender infamous in Portland for assaulting women on public transit, was released from state prison on Friday.
Walter's most recent conviction stemmed from a 2021 incident where he was charged with taking pictures of a woman inside a bar bathroom.
Following the conviction on September 3, 2021, Walter's earliest release date was decided as February 10, 2023.
His plea deal initially involved 22 months in jail, but the state prison's earliest and fulfilled release date was 17 months.
Walter was released into post-prison supervision with Multnomah County.
Walter has previously served prison time over several sentences for assaulting and harassing women.
He became known as the "Trimet Barber" for his documented and convicted attack pattern - chopping off or gluing the hair of women riding TriMet transit, as well as flicking or smearing "white bodily fluids" on them.
His crimes against women - arrests and convictions, all for the same patterns of behavior - span over ten years.
TriMet issued Walter their first-ever lifetime ban in March 2019, after numerous incidents of repeat behavior.
After this ban, Walter was arrested several times for allegedly sexually harassing women in bathrooms.
In recent months, TriMet has expressed it has considered changes to help keep riders and employees safer.
"TriMet is working on a strategy to better address inappropriate behavior on the system, better support our operators and other employees, improve the cleanliness of our vehicles and property, and pursue coordinated efforts with external partners to address social issues and ensure safe access to transit," said TriMet Chief Operating Officer Bonnie Todd in an October 2022 statement.
