I'm actually inclined to believe him more, now that I've read a proper translation. (And I have to be fair to the woman on the panel, she actually did a pretty good job of interviewing him/translating on the fly. She's obviously not a pro, but she did good.)

I think part of the problem is cultural. Alaa often just doesn't state things directly. That comes across as evasive to us, but I'm not sure that it would be interpreted that way by someone else from that part of the world. He also repeats himself a lot and comes across as a "storyteller," but I don't think that's the red flag it feels like. Even the stuff with sending his wife to Canada. I immediately thought the donations thing was a grift, but having listened to the whole thing twice now, I'm not so sure my knee-jerk reaction was accurate. Not that he would be averse to making some money off this, of course, but I don't feel like he's an outright scammer.

That said, whether he's being dishonest or not, the fact remains that it's hard to pin the fucker down on some things. So we still don't know if he's repeating rumors or making shit up or exaggerating for effect or whatever. So keep the grains of salt flowing.

One thing he was crystal fucking clear on is that Chantal makes shit up for drama constantly. We would do well to remember this.
