The 3d gun printing sphere falls into the same trap that literally any sphere that pays in clout falls into; the actually talented and well adjusted people get recognized and get jobs in the industry or leave the "open source" sphere to develop shit you have to pay for, but they mostly steer clear of drama in doing so. This leaves you with a bunch of largely talentless hacks who aren't quite good enough to build shit worth money and as such the only payment they see is clout and reputation, this leads to a bunch of attention whoring faggots trying to out fag each other and stirring shit constantly.

You see it a lot in the tech sphere with things like open source development and modding for instance.

edit to add: This isn't to say that there aren't talented and well adjusted people who still do open source shit, just that they tend to be quieter and less well known. There can also be guys who do open source development for moral reasons and manage to not be colossal faggots about it, JStark was the perfect example of this, but these two types of people are rare compared to the typical clout chaser who infects these sorts of spaces.
