Given the clusterfuck the show ending turned out to be, why should he finish it? He will never please everyone, there will be tremendous butthurt regardless of how he tries to wrap up the story...so just...why even bother?

How do you want ASOIAF to end? Great, then that is how it ended. Leave it at that.

Tbh if you consider the show to have ended with the end of season episode that ends with the Dragon Queen's army sailing to Westeros, and just forget the last two seasons ever existed, it's not a bad ending for the story. It was the last two seasons (particularly the last season) that completely jumped the shark.
The Incest Dragon family where finally returning, with a huge army and 3 grown Dragons, meanwhile the Wall had been breached, and the Frost Zombies are loose in the Kingdom, what do you the reader think happens?
Not the first time an "epic" story ends with a giant cliffhanger.
Game of Thrones had such a spergy and autistic audience that no matter how it ended, people would have complained.
I'll give JK Rowling her due, at least her Harry Potter series didn't end with the absolute bullshit cop-out ending that Stephen King wrote for the Dark Tower series, now that was lazy writing.

When you include incidents that don't result in death or injury, there's around 136 knife crime incidents in England, again every day.

Hating him is just as silly as comparing him to Tolkien imo, he's not and was never a great writer, let him enjoy his remaining years in peace.

Tbh he could do worse than letting the guys who compiled the Almanac books and that World Atlas book put together an ending, those guys know the universe he created better than him, indeed I watched an interview with him where he said he phones them when he can't remember some detail (back when he was still pretending to be working on it at all) to make sure he wasn't creating more plotholes and contradictions.
Theres people that write these series companion books that are way more invested and interested in his universe than he is himself, even if he kept them under an NDA and had them ghost write an ending, I'm sure they'd love the chance, and its a win/win for the Fat Man, he gets to silence the whining of fans, and makes millions more dollars to spend on cake.

Absolutely agree. I've pretty much always said season six should have been the end, with all the fan favorites positioned for the final showdown: Cersei rules some (debatable) portion of the Seven Kingdoms, Jon and Sansa have taken Winterfell back, Arya is on her way back while on a rip roaring rampage of revenge, all while The Night King and The Last Targareyen are moving on everybody. Oh, and Emma Peel is out there somewhere ready to go gloves off due to the deaths of basically her entire family, lol.

ASOIAF is finished. He never finished it, but he's not going to. He won't admit it, but it's true.
He's a pretty good story teller, (Fevre Dream was his best probably) but he bit off way more than he could handle with Ice and Fire, long past the point you could tell he was wandering off into the weeds he kept adding plot points when he should have been winding down, and it became obvious he was never going to finish it.
I don't blame him to be honest, he's old as shit and fell into substantial wealth with Game of Thrones hitting big, he doesn't want to be chained to a typewriter struggling to finish a story he forgot half the plot of fifteen years ago.

It's obvious he lost his passion for the series and it morphed into an over complicated mess that is impossible to untangle in a satisfying way. I think that the show ending is what he wanted to do and the fact that almost everyone hated it has broken his will to finish it. Imagine writing a story everyone knows and nobody likes.
I expect him to do the decent thing and admit that he won't finish it instead of stringing people along, lying and making passive aggressive comments. GRRM has talked disparagingly about Tolkien, thats why people bring him up. At least he finished his fucking books.

It’s beyond me how people can’t tell this kind of distorted thinking is just a strategy to give themselves permission to be as antisocial and crazed as possible.
