New ‘Little Mermaid’ Trailer Shows Halle Bailey Belting Out Under the Sea, First Look at Ursula and Prince Eric

Disney has unveiled a new teaser for its live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” beckoning viewers to become part of Ariel’s world.

The upcoming musical, directed by Rob Marshall, reimagines the original 1989 animated film with live actors. The new adaptation will once again see the mermaid Ariel fall for a human prince who lives above the water, spurring a devilish plot from the nefarious Ursula.

Halle Bailey stars as Ariel, alongside Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder and Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian. The trailer gives a first look at Ursula and Prince Eric.

Disney first announced Bailey would be taking on the role of Ariel in July 2019. A first teaser for the new film dropped in Sept. 2022, spurring much love for Bailey’s singing — even if she only appeared on-screen for 15 seconds.

“It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” Bailey told Variety in an interview, recounting her grandparents’ reaction to the trailer.

The soundtrack is a collaborative effort from Broadway legend Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken, who scored the original animated “The Little Mermaid.” Miranda teamed up with Menken for four original songs, though he assured listeners on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast these new compositions won’t take the place of beloved classics like “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea.”

The film is being produced by Miranda, Marshall, Russell Allen, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Michael Zimmer, with Allison Erlikhman working as an executive producer. Jane Goldman and David Magee penned the script.

“The Little Mermaid” is scheduled to hit theaters May 26.

That‘s lovely and all, but if the movie just looks and talks like a soulless live action cash grab that is not even as close as memorable as the original, then what is the point?

Or as Nintendo Reggie famously put it:

I wasn’t expecting to hear Ursula’s laugh at the end of the trailer, it sounded just like the animated counterpart so kudos to that. The environment is also more brightly colored than I thought it was going to be. Unfortunately it doesn’t look real at all and I can’t suspend my disbelief that it is real.
I can’t get over Ariel, she’s just so uncanny looking. Bailey has a good voice, but she’s just so…unappealing to look at. Her skin looks all fucked up. Ariel in the original film was gorgeous and beautifully animated. Casting an ugly black chick for brownie points just doesn’t mesh with me even if this is a kids fantasy film.

Everyone who saw Planet of the Apes in 2001 knows monkeys are afraid of water.

Let's attack the darkies for trying to be heroes. In hindsight they made the wrong split second decision for noble reasons.
How many predominantly Black schools and suburbs have swimming pools?

Okay, now that I've finished wokesperging, enjoy the video.

Just here to post this.

They got her like Velma, tragic times. All becomes clear once you understand what Americanda's Gods are...
This meme just makes it look like they’re getting a tan, when in actuality they’re casting the most repulsive-looking black women Hollywood can find for white female characters.

You know Cinema is at an all-time low when Blacula seems like a cinematic masterpiece in comparison with all of these. This age of Blaxploitation is just tragic.

He's right. There's no need to put your body through it.

Takeitha, JaMarcus, JaTavious, Dekendrix, Litrelle, LaDarius, LaTevin.

Holy shit, how are they not culturally embarrassed?

Because niggers think they're being 'African'. Hilariously, even Africans find Black Americans abhorrent and savage.

"Part Of Your World" sounds like hot garbage in the trailer. It sounds nothing like the OG song and it grates on the ears. Movie just looks bad. There's nothing attention grabbing, I've seen better visuals in kiddie dark rides.

Did they keep Erik white? He seemed light skinned for the .2 seconds he showed up but that would be par for the course cause Ariel technically saved him once or twice in the original. Could go either way with him.

Is Halle Bailey really unfortunate looking or are the movie filters giving her the appearance of seeming like that.

Wow an Ontario water park was one of my first chewable redpills as a kid. Sometimes these guys really nail Cartman's relatability.

Hol' up. Prince Eric was kept white, and is played by a (in my opinion) very handsome actor who looked a bit like the animated version to begin with. The kiss scene is going to be so gross looking, I can imagine it. Halle Bailey's weird too far apart eyes and gross skin (why does her skin look so bad and why didn't they CGI it) puckering up to to normal looking human man. The chinese won't like it, but neither will I.
