YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said Thursday that she’s stepping down. Chief product officer Neal Mohan will take the lead as the SVP and new head of YouTube.

“Today, after nearly 25 years here, I’ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about,” she said.


Wojcicki joined YouTube as the CEO nine years ago, in 2014.

She will continue working with YouTube teams, coaching members and meeting with creators, she added.

Wojcicki said she agreed with Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai to, in the longer term, take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet. “This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies,” she wrote.

“The time is right for me, and I feel able to do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube,” she noted. “When I joined YouTube nine years ago, one of my first priorities was bringing in an incredible leadership team.”

She said she spent nearly 15 years of her career working with Mohan “first when he came over to Google with the DoubleClick acquisition in 2007 and as his role grew to become SVP of Display and Video Ads.”

I suspect it's more than just her. We saw what happened with Twitter, the entire upper management was affected. And even though Musk fired like 70% of Twitters workforce. I suspect there are still rank and file true believers still inside Twitter attempting to "Fight the Fascists"

Prediction: I think within the next 6-18 months, YouTube will work to take down youtube-dl and any related projects, like NewPipe. Perhaps they are only minuscule part of YouTube's traffic, but the new boss is (apparently) an ad man, and I going to guess that he will want to maximize revenue from ads and premium subscriptions.

Extremely futile. They would have to rewrite how the site works. They could just force everyone to get an account. Though that is pretty easy to bypass thanks to a cookie file.
 
This isn't going to change much, as she'll be replaced by another figurehead while Google/Alphabet does the major work.
 
And will the replacement actually try to unfuck youtube? Like hell. Vid related from 2018 and it still remains true to this day.


The silver lining in this is that youtube is still dying as people are slowly getting the memo that there is no way to get a leg up in a corporatized platform.

It's not Stockholm Syndrome, it's a handful of sycophants and successful millionaire-level Youtubers who had connections to her. Ludwig for example had an interview with her. People like this don't really speak for the average user overall.

I should rejoice, but I've also seen this song and dance before. Her successor is going to be worse and YouTube is going to get worse for the average Joe and Jane. Same thing happened with Dorsey and Parag when it came to Twitter, and I don't think Elon is in a position to buy his way into YT anytime soon.
