Claiming to be a lesbian is a great way to make you feel like a woman, because only women can be lesbians, so if I am one, I am also a woman. It's all a language trick to make words that reinforce the way they feel come out of the mouths of others. If you were to just like men like let's say a normal gay man, well then maybe that's all you are. But if you're weird and still like women, then you're a woman. I also see them use the argument sometimes that they are "Butch" which is an excuse for them to act masculine but still be able to play the victim card of being trans.

The internal explanation is basically that gender and sex aren't linked, and sex organs don't have any bearing on gender. And gender is a choice (maybe depending on which person you're talking to) while sexual attraction isn't a choice. So they choose (or don't choose) to be women, and are attracted to women, and thus are lesbians. I guess.

I think it's a lot of likely gay people, raised during a time where being gay was still reviled and kind of weird even in pretty progressive areas. They were taught that "Gay is evil", so the thought process becomes "I can't be gay... I must be a woman!" and the whole lesbian thing is a charade, a self-affirmation of their not-gayness.
