Hard agree. The reason every game developer pushes microtransactions so hard is because it works. But god forbid you call people out on their bullshit. They make every excuse in the world for why it's not their fault. Or they think it's so quirky or funny that they're a whale. No fuck you. Everything's shit because you and people like you have no self control. I understand there's limits to how hard anyone can be a conscious consumer, but I think not pissing it away on gambling is pretty reasonable.

Oh, that. He's wrong about Souls difficulty. Difficulty should serve to enhance the experience that the developer is seeking to provide, and if the experience you want to provide is that of a world of struggle without compromise, you must build around it accordingly. I personally think Elden Ring's boss design gets a little too video-gamey at the end, a little bit too far past the sweet spot for immersion, reminding you it's a game.

It's not even a correct take on a game-mechanics level. ER does have an easy mode, they're called Spirit Ashes. I did find a lot of the quest progression to be frustratingly opaque (fine for a more linear game, but in an open world you really need to make at least SOME adjustments to provide guidance), but that's not the same thing as 'difficult'. I found progressing through ER was much less difficult than something like Bloodborne was.

But you'd have to actually play the game to recognize that there's a new and massively useful handicap that makes the game substantially more accessible, so...

The 900k video was a desperate attempt to boost the subs out of pity, which temporarily worked (he gained something like 10k-15k IIRC before going back to the decline)
The 800k video was just boring... really boring. It was also a lot more painful to listen to, had a load of people nobody recognises and had zero jokes. So, no temporary boost this time, just more losses. But hey, he doesn't care and only cares about Patreon.

1. He planned this one for a while and knew it was coming - the remix music was new and actually not bad - you can’t just whip that up on a day’s notice.

2. Where do you think the floor is for his subscriber count? Call me a pessimist if you will, but this steady stream surely won’t go on forever. My guess, it slows over time and the next milestone (700k) is late 2025.

3. I unironically feel bad for the guy, still. Yes, he’s a dick. Yes, he’s part of one of the most toxic online communities there is - hey, look who’s talking with that one, amirite? - but still, back in the day he did some things of value. Not only that, he’s dropped hints that his childhood fucked him up. I don’t know whether to wish for him to wake up and realise, knowing the horror he has put his body through or not is pretty much irreversible at this point, or not.

Sitting through his "Hogwarts: A Legacy of Hate" video and I cannot emphasis enough how self-entitled the "you chose a product over people" remark is. Trannies are human vacuums of unwarranted self importance the likes of which I've never before seen. I'm half expecting him to start asking for reparations next, while citing a trans-holocaust that never happened but totally did happen you just don't know it because you chose to ignore it.

People choose products over people every time they buy an iPhone assembled by borderline slave labor in China or clothes manufactured by real slave labor in China, yet Jim Sterling and friends are the real victims of modernity, with a wall of kidult toys lining the shelves behind him in each of his videos. Jim has never had to dig raw minerals from an artisanal mine, he has never had to drink water polluted by oil, he has never had to rummage through soil composed of 90% lead to retrieve metals from dead circuit boards to afford food to buy for himself, he will never experience real poverty, all the while he benefits from these atrocious labor conditions as we all do. Where's his iPhone boycott? Don't tell me pampered Jim would choose a product over people. Where did those clothes come from, Jim? Were they locally sourced from a tailor, or did you get them imported by third world sweatshop labor?

But he's the real victim, clearly.
