I had my own channel for like half of this period but i never exceeded 50 subscribed channels at one time. What is even the point of being subscribed to someone if you don't watch videos they release?

Yeah, I had a lot of channels I liked over the years. A lot. And I was much less picky with what I subscribe to when I was in school and had plenty of free time. I also used to pity-subscribe to small channels.

Let's be honest here, Emp's only just found his place. Regardless of whether or not you like the guy, he makes fucking fantastic documentaries. I've said it before, he makes intensely interesting videos about stuff I don't give a shit about, and I usually end up going away with a respect for the subject that I didn't have before.

I have no interest in NASCAR but I've watched every Emp video on it. Thinking about it, most YouTube that I actually watch (as opposed to just put on for background noise) is someone sperging about something I have zero/barely any interest in, just because I've watched enough previous videos by that YTer that I trust they'll make it entertaining. Even some people I find a bit eye-roll inducing (like Super Eyepatch Wolf) I'll watch because his passion is a bit infectious (I draw the line at most of his anime shit though).

But then there's people like Jim. What's the point making time to watch something when you already know he's going to be a whiny grotesque arsehole the whole way through. If I want to be miserable and angry and inundated with old hot takes I'll go browse Twitter. He's not even good enough for background listening.

It's funny how in reference to the fact he still loses 2k-3k every video like clockwork, Jim's go-to cope is that YouTube isn't showing his videos to subscribers. The only YouTubers I've seen who still whine about that shit after ~2018 are washed up losers whose content just plain sucks.

I can't speak for everyone but in my own experience the real reason why I miss new videos is because my YouTube subscriptions are filled with trash posted by semi-inactive channels I subscribed to way back in 2010 or something. I tried cleaning it up for a while, but with 1,000+ superfluous subscriptions and hundreds of YouTube has-beens shitting out boring Let's Plays once in a blue moon, it becomes impossible to really prune that list without systematically going channel-by-channel. Add to that the channels that release a new video every few days and the subscriptions page becomes a hazy mess of subpar bullshit. I end up just manually scanning my subscriptions for the dozen or so channels I actually care about, and it's easy to miss stuff doing that, especially if the good channels don't have distinctive enough thumbnails.

As for Jimbo, I think the more likely explanation is that former diehard fans (and he did have plenty of those) keep bearing with him and giving him the benefit of the doubt. But everyone has their limits, and eventually more and more normies just go "what the fuck am I even doing with my time here?" and finally cut the rope. YouTube is not to blame here.

If you still use the subscription feed you’re probably in the minority of viewers. The reason YouTubers whine about “muh only 20% of viewers are subscribed” is because most people watch through the recommendation feed, and even being subbed to a channel isn’t a guarantee that every new video will be pushed into your recommendeds.

It’s peak lolcow behavior. The right response is to ignore it and move forward with the content you want to make. Drawing attention to it just encourages more people to return and push unsubscribe.
