Well, if as showed here Trumpy is all but declaring open war on DeSantis, I feel even more strongly that there's going to be a split. Donors and the money - that globalist class - are all moving away from Trump, and have been since even before the embarrassing midterm results. Trump insisting that it's his way or the highway with the nomination puts DeSantis into a bit of a bind - he's still young, so he can simply bide his time for 2028 and bow out of 2024; or he could go scorched-earth and present himself as the future of the right-wing populist streak. I don't see him trying to become VP or anything, given that our ol' pal Chris Christie showed off how begging for scraps worked out in 2016.

But 2024 DeSantis has certain advantages that 2028 DeSantis wouldn't - he can point to his ridiculous windfall in the 2022 election, complaining about woke shit is still hip, he has donor funds sloshing in, and in general political momentum is not the kind of thing that reliably strikes twice. Putting even more pressure on him to make his bid - the Republicans now realize they need to emulate the Democrats. Trump was a pluralist in the primaries - he won the largest share, but never a majority. The instant that the democrats in 2020 stopped squabbling with each other and dropped behind a front-runner, Bernie got absolutely clobbered after navigating a similar course of seeking plurality. And while his minority stake has no doubt increased in its share, if the establishment falls in behind DeSantis from the very start, there's a pretty good chance that he could win the republican primary - and then Trump launches a bull-moose. DeSantis may realize he has no shot of winning if this happens, sure, but the GOP establishment may realize that the dixiecrats need to be reigned in by embarrassment on this scale if the party is ever to triumph in federal elections again, and press DeSantis to be the fall guy.

The base still does not grasp what a plurality even is, and believe themselves to be this insurmountable, unstoppable thing; they will flock to Trump if he splits the ticket because they believe they somehow outnumber trump-hating republicans, trump-hating independents, and the entire democratic spectrum... because they only see Trump yard signs in their neck of the woods. The butthurt would be absolutely legendary.
