Well, well. It looks like China is about to make its move right after the US told it
to be a good little chink and stay the fuck out. Now that the sultan is buried under piles of rubble, the dragon is about to play the peacemaker in his stead and
propose a peace settlement with Xi visiting Moscow later in the spring, if only to say "at least we tried" before giving up its neutrality for good.
This does not bode well for Ukraine because China has an axe to grind with Zelensky. Why, I can hear you ask, what could this heroic defender of his homeland possibly do to offend such a faraway nation? So let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was the pride of USSR. It had factories that built rocket engines, airplaines, heavy machinery, nuclear power plant equipment (ahem) and was the beating industrial heart of the greater whole. Then the dissolution happened and pretty much all of the above was scrapped, stolen, abandoned or stripped of copper wiring to sell, but a few assembly lines still remained. One of such artifacts of the bygone era was "Motor Sich", a Ukrainian company engaged in the development, production, repair and maintenance of aviation gas turbine engines and industrial gas turbine units.
Enter Chinese who have been stealthily buying everything they can get their grubby little mitts on in Russia, Africa, Europe and the US for the last decade or so. Motor Sich was an object of great interest exactly because it was old - this meant it could be purchased relatively cheaply and had the production line and documentation for technology that could be built without expensive electronic components. I am sure you can see where this is going.
The purchase was approved by the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko himself in 2017. Cue handshakes, smiles, promises to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the facility, etc.
And then a change of presidents happened. Out with the old, in with the new, all hail president Zelensky... Who promtly received a phone call from Washington in March 2021 and called off the deal, arrested the director of the facility over allegations of treason, nationalized the whole shebang and told the Chinese to fuck off. The Chinese demanded their money back. Zelensky, as is tradition in his wonderful country, went "you struck a deal with a person other than me, go bother him about that". The Chinese
sued Ukraine for 4.5 billion dollars in damages.
I don't think they will forget this insult any time soon.
