Cat claws don't grow like the monkey nails we have, they grow from the inside out and cats keep them clean and sharp by scratching.
Scratching removes the outer sheath and keeps the nails short and sharp, so when they're young you don't actually need to trim them so long as they're scratching properly. Problems arise when the cat reaches BBJ's age and can't maintain their claws themselves.

Arthritis and similar age-related issues can make it difficult for cats to clean and chew their claws on top of the scratching issue. This means if you start to notice your cat getting longer claws or a buildup of gross "plaque" around the cuticle, you need to start clipping their claws and cleaning the cuticles for them.

Edit: FFG has revealed that BBJ was saved by her brother just one hour before going to the vets to be put down. BBJ had five nails growing into the pads of her feet and was in a lot of pain. She's not staying at FFG's house, but is safe in her family.

We always thought Chantal would die alone and childless after her hysterectomy and be eaten by cats, but now she won't even have a cat to eat her.
