I think it’s possible to wear bold hair/makeup when you’re ancient. My Nan has a dyed blue black old lady perm with matte navy blue panda eyeshadow and still looks miles better than this guy. To me there are 3 aspects that are making this guy look cringe:

If they were serious, there are plenty of trouser roles (Cherubino, Octavian) for sopranos, and even more roles (Leonore, Zdenka) that requires a female character to cross-dress.
