We live in a current year pop culture garbage dump where every piece of media in existence and every other famous person beats people over the head with a specific political message while simultaneously race relations keeps getting worse and worse since 2010 with no end or bottom in sight, ruining the lives of normal people in the lower classes below the elites that run media and entertainment from their walled off mansions. The fact more people with a reputation haven't said the same shit is what's insane right now.

I know this thread is about Scott Adams and by extension Dilbert; but Bill Watterson has always come off as some pretentious holier than thou person. Make fun of people using complex words for the sake of it while you name your characters after philosophers and shit. Also was Calvin and Hobbes the first known example of "words words words" in the world of newspaper comic strips? Cause every strip I come across is 80% text. The art is nice, but Christ, this dude is more of a windbag than I am.

Calvin and Hobbes is the most overrated thing probably ever created after the Beatles. Yeah, I'll go with Peanuts or the Far Side or something that's witty without beating you over the head with pseudo-intellectualism.

The thing about Bill Watterson is that the guy is pretty consistent. He truly believed that his comics were art and therefore immoral to commercialize with brand deals/movies/TV/merch so he vehemently refused to do so. He felt his writing getting stale, so he stopped it (in the prime era of newspaper comics no less) before it became Garfield or Dilbert. He doesn't whore for fame or attention and rarely does interviews. When he does, he keeps his mouth shut about pretty much anything out of his wheelhouse (art and comics). Say what you want about him being pretentious psuedo-intellectual dipshit, Bill Watterson does deserve the admiration and/or respect people give him. Certainly more than Gary Larson, who's greasy lawyer will go to the ends of the internet to copyright claim comics and send hissy, passive aggressive emails.

Bill did a 10th Anniversary book where he talks about some of his views on the strips he made and some insight into some of the inspirations. You do generally get an "old man yells at cloud" vibe about him. He (at least at the time) believed life would be better if kids were allowed to frolic outside (yet hates camping?), never exposed to TV or most other forms of media, was small time into eco issues and had daddy issues. If he wasn't so private I think he'd basically be a left-leaning boomer


I'll give Bill this, he quit when he knew his heart wasn't really in it anymore and he saw that he had less and less control over things. Maybe it's for the best he stayed private really.


Scott is hard to figure out, I'm honestly surprised he lasted this long as the Dilbert strips have been pretty openly against wokeness for a while but he's done stuff like this for years where he puts out an outrageous statement that ruffles feathers then eventually explains on his coffee stream why he did it. There's nothing new about this other than he went into race relations territory.


Regardless I imagine he'll be fine - I imagine he's put money into things to make sure he's covered even if no papers take Dilbert going forward.

Larson is just a Boomer who doesn't bother to get the internet. In a way I get where he's coming from he doesn't want his works to enter meme culture. And with AI artwork well we're coming to that point where AI can really imitate his art.

Just made this in 30 seconds from OpenAI's Dalle-2. It failed in making a Far Side Bipedal Cow but the Kiwi Bird is pretty good.
