The only reason Constantinople became relevant was because the empire fractured, who knows if that ever would've happened with the republic. IMO Alexandria would've been the second premenint city in the roman world had the republic never fallen. The republic was on the verge of collapse when he took power. Julius Caesar managed to, in the time he had, do a lot of good to set the republic to rights. At the time he had taken power, the Optimates (His opposition political party) had murdered every single one of the Populares (His political party) who had been elected and had tried to fix the problems the republic was facing for around a century or more. The Optimates were the elites of rome who has seized all the land of in italy, driving out the less wealthy and forcing them into the cities, exclusively used slave labor to avoid paying wages, and a whole host of other issues. Hell, the previous dictator, Sulla, took power as Dictator and used that to murder and seize the money of every single one of his political opponents, with Julius Caesar barely avoiding being killed.

TL;DR Julius Caesar saved the republic, since the republic technically never ended since the Senate was still a thing up till the Turkroaches destroyed the Eastern Empire (Byzantium).
