NGL it was definitely the discordfaggotry that killed imageboards
IMO what killed image boards is what killed the internet in general: smartphones, and the consequent demographic shift
The internet was for researchers and smart early adopters for a long time, then an evil turtleneck-wearing man's fruit company created a device that invited billions of brown 80-IQ hellspawn. No corner of the internet, howsoever remote, has remained pure. The archetypical modern 4chan user is a deep brown mexican teenager emitting his worthless thoughts in broken English across every thread on the site at all times

You kinda have a point there, but I find it hard to believe that any internet with 4chan and the like back then could be considered "pure".

Mods killed them. 2014 was when moot cucked out and a year before the app even launched

It was objectively better than now. The internet was never "pure" (whatever that means) but smaller, tight-nit communities thrived and gatekeeping retards who didn't fit in (or never tried to) was encouraged (lurk more, etc.) instead of wanting "inclusiveness". ESLs who couldn't communicate coherently were ignored or told to learn the language before being taken seriously.

It was a few years until it really took off into the walled garden strain of weaponzed autism the farms documents well today.

“Tight knit” communities didnt mean shit when they started gatekeeping anyone who would have helped preserve them and handed over the keys to the kingdom to anyone other than their rightful heirs with a twisted smile.

I always disliked that second sentence, about how you can "find everything here more quickly and efficiently anywhere else". That's just not true. 4chan is a unique place, there's nothing quite like it out there. Yes, you can technically "talk about video games" on Reddit or Twitter or (god help you) Discord, but 4chan is by far the largest non-algorithmized bulletin board in the world. There's not quite another place like /v/, or /f/, or /int/, or /a/, or any number of other boards. It's great.
The only thing unique about 4chan at this point is you can say nigger and faggot without being banned. You can easily find better information on new games, music and anime on KF or even on some smaller niche subreddits. You also don't have to wade through an ocean of shit to find that information either. Actual in depth discussion about topics is rare on the major boards. I say this as someone who has used 4chan for over a decade it's not special or unique. This is what people addicted to the site say to themselves to feel smug and superior.

Finding information was never the point of 4chan, it's not a search engine. The allure was being able to have conversations with random people without being censored. 4chan is still the least-moderated large website. It's certainly less moderated than Kiwifarms and oddly is less moderated than most alt-chans, excepting maybe soyjak.party.

4chan continues to more or less unilaterally control internet culture (which increasingly controls IRL culture) as well, it's pretty common to see a meme gain passing relevance on 4chan and then in a year or two, ordinary people IRL are using it in some capacity without ever knowing about the website

That's not true at all. The mods here are very hands off in their moderation. You have to be a seriously annoying fuck to get banned here. I've received 3 day bans for just responding to an off topic thread on /v/. The tranny jannies love to abuse their tiny bit of power. I've never once been thread banned or banned on Kiwifarms.

Bull-fucking-shit.

I've been banned for "racism outside of /b/" not mention "low quality shitposting (when they've let it slide from other posters)" countless times after going there on and off post-gamergate exodus. Oh and don't forget "complaining about moderation or its policies" any time someone notices how inconsistent hotpocketing gets. "Least moderated" my ass, this is why the formerly known "internet hate machine" earned the title of cuckchan:

Conversely in the couple years I've been on KF (and alt-chans before that) none of that has been a problem. It's why some of us post in this thread and have an axe to grind.

*uses paragraph breaks or the tab key while writing*

"AAAAAAHHHHH REDDIT SPACING REDDIT SPACING GO BACK TO REDDIT FAGGOT"

Why do they do this? 🤔
I guess some channers failed their english class and, as a result, have grown to despise writing structure. I kinda get why they feel that way about using the tab key, though. Unless you're the OP, you have almost no reason to use it when making a reply and it comes off as a little pompous.

I obviously have no proof of this but I swear to god it feels like the moderators on 4chan hold grudges too. If you have a history of being banned sometimes they will just throw out "low quality posting" or "racism outside of /b/" or ban you for posting in an off topic thread just to get you off the website for a bit. Weird autistic revenge type shit. It's funny to think some people still call it the last wild west part of the internet when it's not at all. Kiwifarms is. 4chan has been tamed since at least Gamergate (another bullshit thing you would get banned for on /v/)

Way ahead of you. I don't think 4chan ever used to be cool. I perceived it as cool when I was around 15 - 18 years old. Fast forward to adulthood, I realized that 4chan isn't too different from Raccoon City; its inhabitants are all grotesque monsters that can only groan and attack anything that provides even a petty amount of sustenance. The only survivors you'll encounter there are infected, eventually, they'll turn and attack you. If you're a true survivor, and you manage to escape, you'll be laughing it all off when you hear on the news the place got nuked by the government.
4chan used to be useful. Before high speed internet you would have a bunch of weebs and shut-ins who trolled news sites for the latest updates or fansub/translation releases and within seconds it would be posted on the relevant board. Original 4chan was what Reddit intended to be. These days it's much easier to track things via social media follows and there's less fan projects overall. Generals probably don't help.

Discord doesn't help but it's hardly the only problem.

In the 90's the internet was already killed by AOL. You're likely of the generation the original online community consider a cancer. Eternal summer is older than a lot of us.

I see you don't post on any boards I do. If I said fuck niggers and faggots in some generals I post on I would get thread purged and banned for 3 days. And it would only be 3 days because you can't appeal those. They know the ban wouldn't stand but 3 days mean no one checks it.

They do keep grudges. You can see how much a board changes every new janitor cycle. You can go from literal Hitler to being ignored by mods completely depending on the thread or a janny retiring.

Since we're talking about moderation and shitposting, do any of your favorite threads have unique shitposters that makes them different from most? Like in posting style, length of time shitposting or just plain craziness?

forums were always better for conversations, 4chan is were people go dump their trash. The anonimity coupled with no registration and how quick threads get flushed down just incentivizes shitposting, shit stirring and being an edgy retard for its own sake. being insightful on 4chan is like a wasted effort.

There's still a need for shitholes online were you can scream like a moron with not even a username but lets not pretend like it was ever the peak of discourse. Forums dying off and being absorbed by Discord, Reddit and shitty FB groups is a bigger lost for internet culture.

Forums are all wrapped up in identities and egoes and micro-moderation. No interesting thoughts come out of an environment where expression is so restrained. It's why chans and pseudonymous Twitter dominated internet culture for the past decades, not vbulletin hobby boards
