It is being dishonestly portrayed as something specific to DeSantis but it was introduced by a state senator and would apply to writing about any elected member of the executive or legislative state branches. I am not a Floridian but I think it is relating to the recent push by DeSantis to make it easier to file defamation suits, and the law to protect Floridians from big tech censorship.I ain't well versed on laws or press, why does DeSantis want this??
I do think the way the law is written is a little too vague, but I appreciate the general idea and the attempts to reign in private interest using big tech and media to spread their political narratives. I don't see how it is an encroachment on free speech to have to be transparent about your funding. And I respect that Florida is trying to use their state laws to prevent outside forces from controlling FL politics.
I recently tried to track down funding of political media narratives in Washington state on the Catboy forum and was struck by how frustrating it is to be able to find which PACs are donating to opposition media for a candidate yet it's impossible to figure out exactly what media and narratives are being seeded. I personally think these types of rules would benefit people to be able to understand who is creating the narratives given to them in the media about politics.
