You know, every time I think it can't get worse, it does. I dislike vtubers because of the parasociality of them, I can't really stand the idea of getting attached to an entirely invented person with a computer software generated visage, it's just a bit too nightmarish for me. That, combined with the way that the japanese idol industry latched onto the trend like a fucking lamprey basically as soon as it was technically feasible and now by and large controls the vtuber space is fucking disgusting.
All that being said, there's a reason a lot of these people chose to be vtubers instead of streamers. Social issues, severe anxiety, growing up in the nightmare downward spiral corporatocracy that is Japanese society, there's plenty of reasons not to show your face, and having an avatar does allow you to still make some kind of connection to the viewer. I'm not intimately familiar with the lore, but it seems like pikamee was one of these cases.
You don't just spontaneously retire from a business like this, she's been planning to go for a while, but now instead of having her last few streams be a farewell to a community that for all it's weirdness did genuinely enjoy her content, now they're going to be poisoned by this black cloud of IdPol bullshit and general hatred. How terminally online do you have to be to send death threats and harassment to a person who probably doesn't even fucking know about your issues with the game they're playing. Beyond that, at no point between them seeing her announce she was going to play the wizard game and them hitting send on those messages did it occur to them "hey wait a minute, this is another human being, maybe I should reconsider."
These people are ghouls with no empathy, not only allowed by, but encouraged to sink further into their hatred death spiral by the inherent disconnection between human beings propagated by the web2.0 media space. It continues to baffle me how a community "fighting for inclusion, diversity, and equality" seems to regularly engage in entirely immoral behavior. I understand I sound like some fundie asswipe from the 80s here, talking about Morals and all that, but it's what i've noticed about these "people." They don't fucking have any, they operate on a tribal group vs group mentality at best, and a hedonistic pleasure-at-all-costs level at worst.
When I was younger I hated my family and those older than me in general for not just "living and letting live" in regards to trans people. I bought their bullshit, that they're persecuted at every turn and that older people are just wrong and will be "on the wrong side of history." They weren't backwards or unaccepting, they just knew something I didn't.
