This was the talk of the town for a lot of people I know surprisingly, but the mainstream news stations have been awfully quiet about it (of course). Different person and a little late, but it is absolutely untrue that gun ownership only raises the risk of gun suicide, not suicide in general. Suicide is usually very impulsive. If you have a suicidal impulse but have no quick means of suicide then you will survive once the suicidal impulse has passed. Even if you attempt suicide but do it in a way that's survivable then you'll probably survive, and most people don't go on to attempt again.

On the other hand, if you have a suicidal impulse but use the gun that you have nearby then you're dead. It doesn't matter that the impulse would have gone away, it's just too late. Jumping from a tall building/bridge/whatever is similar, which is why suicide barriers work: they make impulsive suicide more difficult. There's a myth that if you take away one method then people will just find another way to kill themselves, but it is not true at all. Study after study has demonstrated that taking away a common high-lethality method of suicide reduces suicide rates overall.

A famous example is how in the UK a common suicide method, especially for women, was CO inhalation by sticking your head in the oven. As the UK switched to natural gas, CO inhalation suicides dropped dramatically and the overall suicide rate decreased as well and has never gone back to where it was pre-1965.

He cites a study of survivors that said only 13 percent reported thinking about committing suicide for eight hours or longer; 70 percent said they thought about it for less than an hour; and a whopping 24 percent said the idea had occurred to them less than five minutes before their attempt."

It makes sense that if suicide is that impulsive then making impulsive suicide more difficult will make people less likely to die by suicide. Of course there are some people who plan their suicide and will find a method no matter what, but they are not the majority of suicide deaths.

This is in no way a comment about gun politics - like I mentioned with jumping suicides, guns aren't even the only lethal method researchers in this area look at - I just actually find it kind of interesting and the "they'll just find a way to kill themselves some other way" myth has become a bit of a pet peeve.

There are certainly differences between my personality and my brothers’, but we have similar analytical minds, curiousity and emotional make-up - which we share with our mother.
