It's a strange kind of irony that the more someone insists on calling themselves "queer" specifically, the less likely it is that they are actually the least bit gay. It's been co-opted by the "I'm nonbinary/intersex/[invented nonsense gender] and there is no such thing as an opposite sex to that, ergo any relationship I have is automatically 'queer' (not to be confused with 'gay' but let's gloss over that)" crowd.
