First issue here is your use of "troon". The word has roots in "goon" and a "goon" is not a 'vanilla' place of behavior. The online trans people who get featured here are the minority. If one goes looking for for complaints about goonish behavior you'll find it and the social media firms will keep shoving that shit so you start to think its WAY more important than it actually is.
Corps have plenty of non "diversity hires" who are failures but are kept on. Not every place is following the brutal Jack Welsh so all kinds of crappy people remain employed. Most actual jobs are at companies that are too damn small to worry about ESG and diversity hires.
Besides if you want big money you don't work for others. Others work for you. Providing actual value and not some BS about online web stores.
They got plenty of handouts - the kind of thing you claim was what you were seeking. A handout is a handout - but by all means just keep on blinders about university and employers.

I don't understand why even thinking about saying you're a troon for the benefits is met with such vitriol, and I despise troons. But then, I also think that just because you have vague thoughts and what ifs doesn't mean much.
If you live somewhere more urban - and not 'urban', but just big city - the less it takes. You don't have to do anything in the real world except change your pronouns, and probably grow your hair out (male) or cut it short (female). Men might have to shave, but only might. In a university environment especially, you'll just be called Stunning and Brave regardless.
When treated as a scam, especially, I can see the point. We're almost at the point you could automate the online troon persona, and then after a couple of months set up a GFM and a Patreon and hey, free money that is coming in from guaranteed assholes you don't have to feel bad for scamming. I figured out a while back that explicitly woke fund-raising tops out at somewhere just over $80k - Zoe Quinn's never to be completed Chuck Tingle Kickstarter for that much at the height of her GG celebrity, and a reminder that Lucas raised $100k Canadian, which equals at most around $85k US - and that's not something to sneeze at, especially if you're poor and that represents more than a year's income.
There was a story a few years back about a Canadian man who changed his gender to female solely to get cheaper car insurance. Didn't have to do a single thing other than that. The troon shield is a real thing, we all know that. If you want to do it in real life it would take a fuckload of chutzpah, but it's been shown time and time again that in Clown World, there are legitimate, undeniable benefits to it, and taking the high road is better but if 'don't hate the player, hate the game' holds true then faking trooning out can provide a lot of material benefits. Even if you just create a troon persona online, a minimal investment of some fake followers, regular tweets that are barely above ChatGPT level and then constant spamming of various hashtags and a link to your cash app of choice will get you at least a little extra spending money.
The social aspect depends on who you know. Unfortunately, a lot of my people in my hobbies, like role-playing, are either troons or handmaidens, male and female, and gaming isn't a solo endeavour. It's also hard to try and gauge who believes it vs. who's playing along - make one wrong guess about it, or about who you can trust to even question part of the troon narrative, even if you're using the bad behaviour of people you both know as examples, can cause you great harm socially.
So I've wondered what would happen if I suddenly told them all I was trans, became an asshole about my pronouns, but changed nothing else about myself physically. Basically confronted them with what their dogma requires, with the level of effort other people in the hobby have put in to their transitions. In times when I've been angered by the leeway some of these troons/genderspecials have gotten for bad behaviour from the same people who stopped being my friend because I said something positive about JK Rowling, it's crossed my mind. They've shown the friendship is conditional anyway, they'd have to deal with me as part of a Geek Social Fallacy, I wouldn't be doing anything they don't already happily accommodate from people they get on with far less.
I haven't done it. I wouldn't. I'm not a narcissist, I'm not consumed with the self-righteous fury that would make antagonising large swathes of people tolerable. It also goes against everything I believe in terms of humanity, and what we are and should try and be. But fuck if the thought hasn't crossed my mind in dealing with the large numbers of people I know who demand, implicitly or explicitly, that I follow the narrative or suffer the consequences.
And, if as gets repeated here a fair bit, the internet is not real life, making a fake troon with a surgery GFM and an obnoxious Twitter account to get free money sometimes seems like a no-brainer. To pull in a grand a month would take more effort, but even the lowest-passing troons like Dave Muscato, Sean Saphixy and Lou Gagliardi, although all of them lie about how much they actually get from their grifts, none of them get nothing. As technology advances to a point where you could almost entirely bot an account without having to be active in the degeneracy of pronoun-based social media, and you see through dozens of threads the Chernobyls of humanity that routinely get hundreds of dollars a month for being a shit person with the right flags in their bio, I'd be surprised if it hadn't crossed your mind as well, even just as a passing thought.
And we're not even the dedicated trolls - or at least posters don't say if they are - who are already infiltrating these spaces with a fabricated account where most of the work is already done. A number of Farmers get information from locked accounts, private boards, and especially relevant to this thread paranoid, restricted Discord channels. They have their foot in the door already, and it's not like begging for money would make their accounts less plausible.
I think it's ludicrous to post on the Farms, let alone in Lucas's thread, that there's no reason to even imagine what it would be like, pretending to troon out, for the financial rewards and social protections. You wouldn't even need a stinkditch, and you'd get defended and insulated from the consequences of embezzlement, some high-grade misogyny and racism, grifting free trips overseas and to a convention and even maliciously attacking LGBTs.

If your opsec is poor and you get doxed, you get more support, and even if you somehow get so fully exposed that people stop believing you're genuine, you've loosened another pin in the ideology that is self-ID. Hard agree with your whole post. There are so many degenerates out there with pockets to empty, and I would guess there are people out there doing exactly this- AI generating a grifting troon, or some furry/loli/even more degnerate AI porn starving artist, or whatever the kids are into these days. If I were less busy, more morally bankrupt, and knew how any of the AI shit worked, maybe I'd do it myself.
At the root of this, I think, is the real problem with social media- "online friends" can be and usually are fake as fuck- and now they might actually be straight up not real. Anyone who knows more people online than IRL is terminally online, probably mentally ill, and a drain on society.

Troonshine
Makes 100ml, 40mg/ml potency, serves 1 troon for 10 years, for other sizes scale accordingly

Steps
Measure out 4 grams of Estradiol in the ester you choose, along with benzyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol and carrier oil, in a beaker
Use a stir rod to break up larger clumps
Put in a stir bar, seal beaker with foil.
Heat while stirring in an oil bath at 95C for 30 minutes.
Decant solution into 4 25ml syringes, attach a syringe filter(0.22um) and collect the filtrate into vials.
Seal the vials
Autoclave at 134C for 30 minutes to kill microorganisms
End product ready for use

This remains in the realm of speculation, because I had only ever thought about it. It also wasn't "like a hobby".
But I would like to see evidence of a single troon being prosecuted for ever scamming through GoFundMes, Kickstarters or indeed any form of begging when they don't use the funds the way they claim. Chloe Sagal claimed to have been in a car accident to raise funds and then tried to use the money for gender surgery - and the guy who reported on it was fired. Lucas originally claimed he was going to use part of his fundraising for a lawsuit against the London Police, a lawsuit that doesn't exist. A number of people feel scammed, now believing it all went up his nose. I'm not seeing legal repercussions there.
A fair number of troons hide their identities online - 'fearing for their lives' and so on - but that doesn't stop them begging. If the money doesn't go where they say it will, no one seems to care. It certainly never becomes a police matter, whether you're failing to run an alpaca ranch or regularly begging for thousands of dollars to make a rent you don't have to pay.
Again, this isn't going to happen on my part. It has happened - I only vaguely remember the details of one case, but there was some kid who faked trooning out online with a couple of shadowy selfies and your stereotypical complaints about abusive parents, he got over $10k, took the money, and was never heard from again. It's also widely reported that the shop teacher in Canada with the size Z prosthetic breasts is only doing it to force a point, trying to get fired so he can sue on protected grounds. But there are thousands upon thousands of ebeggers - not all troons - who lie about why they need money and how they would spend it, and consequences of a non-online nature seem not just thin on the ground, but completely absent.
But yes, to get anywhere near the rewards we see the most low-effort grifters get here, you'd have to invest time and effort. Even worse, you'd have to convincingly move through lolcow spaces, immerse yourself in their terminally online existences to provide both a credible footprint and a sheen of legitimacy. That's the true cost, one that technology can't quite wipe away yet. The effort is less than it might seem - these are narcissists who want validation and asspats and don't care about the truth, after all. But it's still a lot more staring into the abyss than just mocking a cow in their thread.
For the third time, because it seems this part is consistently ignored - I'm not going to do this. But you seem under the misapprehension that just because something is against the law means it's going to be prosecuted. Online grifts are very common, not just from troons but from all walks of life. But troons in particular have a formula for begging and get extra-defensive if someone gets called out for their grift because they're aware that if people start coming for #transcrowdfund, they're also in the firing line.
If you have a list of troons who have been arrested and convicted for misuse of crowdfunding money, I'd happily read it and revel in their comeuppance, but people like Lucas and the TransLifeline troons embezzled substantial amounts of money and got away without legal repercussions. In fact the only person I know of who has been arrested, convicted and spent time in jail for such a crime is Lou Gagliardi's mother Denise, who took the toys donated to her sister because her house burned down and sold them for personal gain. And I don't even think most of that was online.
The troonshield is real, and definitely applies to grifting 'the community'. And if you don't give a shit about being part of said community, you're not going to care if they turn against you - if you're unable to protect your identity well enough, and avoid raising enough suspicions, that is. Grifts happen all along the spectrums of online spaces, but troons particularly aren't going to get banned from online processors, financial institutions and fundraising sites.
