I was watching a video by male detransitioner Richie/TulipR and that's basically what he said. He was asked why such a generally logical person could fall for the cult and he said he was just so fucked up in the head and and hated himself so much he made it make sense to himself.

So you have someone in that state of mind and then the doctors and the therapists come in and validate your weird broken logic and say "you're right! Cutting your dick off *will* make you feel better!".

I didn't always feel this way but now I really question the extent to which people with gender dysphoria can consent to these surgeries. It's so plain to me now, I don't know why it wasn't obvious to me before. Maybe it's my "personal freedom!" Americanness.

Exactly. To an outside observer, transitioning is a completely batshit thing to do. To troons, it's a reasonable action given the information they possess. I don't think that the way to approach these people is by trying to convince them that they're irrational and deluded, even though they are.

With any patient who is experiencing delusions, the first and most important thing to remember is that you cannot convince him that what he believes is not rational. It's rational for him based on what he knows to be true about the world, and the more you say otherwise, the more entrenched his belief becomes and the more likely he is to decide that you aren't trustworthy. By the same token, it's also critical not to "play along" and act like you believe in whatever the delusion is. If someone tells you that the Mossad are passing encrypted messages to him via the headlines of the Wall Street Journal, you don't ask him what's new in Jerusalem. If someone thinks that the feds implanted a microchip in his arm, you don't hand him a scalpel. Individuals who have gender-based delusions aren't going to be cured by surgery any more than they can be convinced by rational debate.

I firmly believe that the majority of patients undergoing SRS are not capable of consent, and providers are willingly looking the other way. In addition, I suspect that many physicians are not honest with prospective patients about the off-target effects of medical transition, nor do I think that the surgeons offering SRS procedures are particularly forthcoming about the likelihood of major complications or the potential impact of those complications on quality of life.

Even if we assume troons are in compos mentis, the patient's intellectual capacity to make a decision is not the only factor. The definition of consent, as understood in both jurisprudence and in bioethics, requires that a patient not merely receive all of the broadly pertinent facts about the nature of a treatment and its potential benefits and risks, but also that this information is conveyed in such a way that he understands the impact those risks and benefits could have on him individually. A patient cannot give valid consent if he doesn't actually understand what could happen if he agrees to undergo a given procedure.

Unfortunately for the mutilated troons, signing a consent form is considered sufficient proof of understanding, so even if any of them could get off the Internet or stop masturbating long enough to pursue legal action, they have no recourse. Sucks to suck!

It would seem that things like what we see here would violate medical ethics guidelines several times over and that no surgeon would carry them out even if the potential patient is capable of giving rational consent or not, just because of the high risk of medical complcations and permanent disfigurement involved. If this were any other procedure with the same degree of negative outcomes and statistics, would it not be illegal?

Not a medfag, but my guess is that it's a combination of a few things. One, it's experimental so patients are basically signing away all of their rights. Plus in the US there's all of the anti-descrimination bs that forces insurance companies to pay out the ass for every little troon whim, creating a massive monitary incentive. I think that's why we see so many tifs get mastectomies under age 26- they're still on mommy and daddy's insurance plan.

Plus you have the online hugboxes hounding down any dissent. We've all seen it - "I can't pee and I'm in excruciating pain and I nearly died that one time but no regrets!!! My surgeon is a god!!!! I'm so happy!!"

So tl;dr the money far outweighs the risk for these doctors

It's so fascinating to me how many of these FTMs have super-tatted arms despite the fact that phalloplasty is known for mainly using arms. It makes sense - they usually have BPD and poor impulse control which tends to manifest itself in poorly thought out tattoos, but still, why not do any other part of your body if you know damn well you're gonna need your arms to make a fake penis? Why spend all that money on a tattoo to rip it off yourself anyway?

Actually as I'm typing this out I think I can answer my own question - most of them probably went and did the tattoos before 'realizing' they were trans. Because of course it's innate and you're trans from inside the womb etc etc but for some strange baffling reason, many of them only troon out in their teens/adulthood after spending immeasurable time in tranny infested online communities. Funny, that. So I guess they actually didn't know they'd need their arms for a fake dick because up until very recently, they didn't even want a fake dick. And thanks to the extremely rapid surgery pipeline, a young mentally ill woman can wake up and decide she wants a penis & actually get it within a few years' time. Scary to think about.
