The idea Trump is losing support from the GOP because he didn't pardon J6 protestors is divorced from reality. It's as stupid as the notion that GOP voters won't enthusiastically walk over broken glass to vote for him again because of 'his vaccine.' As far as the Fox crowd is concerned, it is Joe Biden, not Donald Trump, who committed unforgivable treachery against those J6 'patriots.' Taking a group of people already receptive to messianic thinking and offering them a flesh-and-blood savior is a recipe for a cult of personality not a coherent political movement. The MAGA crowd has no actual political preferences. It is all aimless grievance politics. I'll grant you that Trump's position within the Republican voter base has diminished, but not to any significant degree.

The notion among GOP establishment types that someone like Ron "Tiny" DeSantis could become the avatar of the base's mindless resentment is laughable. Trump is still going to be the GOP nominee in 2024 unless he decides otherwise--jailed or not, the GOP is Trump. As much as elected Republicans might loathe the idea, Trump is the only guy who can get the base excited to vote. If he goes to jail, it won't matter as much as Democrats and hopelessly naive Republicans believe it will. Donald would drag DeSantis down with him, giving Biden a 2nd term, before ever letting him win where he himself lost.

I was considering places like r/conservative consistently arguing that DeSantis ought to be the nominee rather than Trump (if this was genuine it would be a good counter-argument) but then I remembered what Reddit actually exists to do: force the illusion of consensus. Something that convinces me further than Trump's support is organic yet deranged while DeSantis' push is probably a big jewish trick.
