Business Suburban Bakery Targeted After Planning Drag Show Could Soon Close ‘Due to Horrific Harassment': Owner - You get what you deserve

A suburban Chicago bakery that was targeted after announcing plans to host a family-friendly drag brunch may now close due to what the bakery's owner described as "horrific harassment that no business should endure."

UpRising Bakery and Cafe in Lake in the Hills said it plans to close on March 31 if it cannot make up for losses it has experienced since it became the center of controversy in July 2022.

“Closing our doors is the direct result of the horrific attacks, endless harassment, and unrelenting negative misinformation about our establishment in the last eight months,” owner Corinna Sac said in a statement.

UpRising Bakery and Cafe first made headlines last summer when the bakery scheduled a drag show brunch that was set to be for all ages. In what would eventually become part of a national trend, the bakery was quickly targeted with "hateful comments and fake negative reviews" and, later, threats of violence and vandalism.

The night before the planned event, the bakery's windows were broken and walls were defaced with spray paint, forcing the cancellation of the performance.

A report from the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism makes note of several drag events across the country that have been canceled over safety concerns after being targeted by extremist groups. A similar event at the Downers Grove Public Library was also canceled due to such threats.

Since the vandalism and canceled drag show, Sac said she has faced ongoing threats, "horrific harassment, vandalism" and a "lack of support from local government to mitigate the abuse," all of which has led to a decline in sales.

Sac, who identifies as bisexual, said the business would need more than $30,000 to keep its doors open.

“Everything I have is in this business, our home, cars, retirement, savings. We put everything we had on the line and personally secured this location, our equipment, and our dreams," she said.

The bakery plans to continue to host several events and fundraisers through the end of the month, "with the hopes to keep the doors open" and "if nothing else reduce some of the debt."

For its final two days open, the business asks that customers tip the same amount as their bill in attempt to help employees left without a job following the closure.

“I wish to thank every single one of you who have defended us, protected us, and supported us. I am asking for one more favor, help me send off our staff with a little financial protection," Sac said. "The 'tip the bill' campaign will help as all funds will be split among the staff. The goal is to give them each equivalent of one extra paycheck to see them through to their next venture.”

Sac said despite the closure she plans to continue to share her story and fight to keep others from experiencing what she did.

“If we have to go out, we will go out with a bang and make it long-lasting and positive,” she said. “I will do everything I can to make sure what happened to my American Dream doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

They've had many health inspection visits due to complaints, so this alleged harassment could be a convenient excuse for the business to cry wolf.

What really makes me chuckle is that so many drag queens are probably getting so hard thinking they've caused a civil war in society and that a faction is ready to go to war for them, like they're some sort of Helen of Troy, but ugly and autistic.

In reality, this has nothing to do with them. This is about people desperate for approval and to prove that they are more tolerant and inclusive than their neighbors. As soon as the "new thing" shows up, they will equally virtue-signal for that thing and forget that drags were even a thing.

#JusticeForJuicy 2.0?

Please let it be #JusticeForJuicy all over again.

Why the fuck is a bakery hosting a drag show?
Why indeed.
Why are they hosting a "family" drag show?
Why kids?
Why families?
This was NEVER EVER an issue, let alone in ANYONE'S lexicon 20 years ago.

How...do you just bobblehead and agree--and even participate in something so CLEARLY WRONG??

That sounds dumb. I don't support businesses being harassed out of business whether it is a Christian bakery who won't do a gay wedding cake or a tranny co-op cafe doing Drag Queen Story Hour.

unrelenting negative misinformation

And there's the key to understanding the nature of these "attacks" they claim, as well as the damage. Now i'm just waiting for the claims that this is "economic terrorism" or something.

They fucked around and found out, so OC the elites aren't going to let it go without a tantrum.

I love it when we do reruns. Let's take another look at the Sacs and the "child friendly" drag show they hosted:

Yeah it's just plain bizarre+risque, not an effort to look feminine.

Found more recent social media for the bakery owner and her effete Hispanic husband.

Communists lose again
100% that they're blaming a fake (or at the most largely overblown) "harassment campaign" to cover for the fact that every single one of these commie coffeeshop storefronts are run by morons who antagonize most of their potential customer base, can't run a business, and eventually goes under with in-fighting. We've seen it before in Portland and other places and it even extends to other businesses too, the Tranch was just an extended version of this on a larger, longer scale.

Communism...communism never changes.

Nope.

"Our house is on the line, our cars, our children's savings account -- everything is here in this business. My kids helped paint the walls, we're very invested," Sac said.

The bakery has been the target of bigotry and anti-LGBTQ hate and harassment since last summer after Sac announced they would host a drag show on the premises.

'Hate has no home here': UpRising Bakery reopens after vandalism forces drag show cancellation

"It became really evident in January, February time frame that we weren't going to be able to make it another few months here. So we decided we are going to have to close the doors," she said.

But that all changed for Sac after an outpouring of support.

"We needed to have $30,000 by [Friday] in order to stay open and we exceeded that amount just on one GoFundMe," Sac said.

Instead, through GoFundMe and in-house donations, they raised more than $50,000.

"People are realizing that it's not enough to just do thoughts and prayers, or 'we're sending our love.' People are actually putting their money where their thoughts and prayers are, or they're putting their feet on the ground and they're actually making changes," Sac said.

Now, the focal point of the space is this board with messages of love. It was the largest board placed after vandals smashed out the bakery's windows last year.

"It's just a reminder for us every day to keep going, and when people come in they can read that too. And when people come in, there might be a message that they really needed to hear that day," Sac said.

Governor JB Pritzker even left his own message saying, "Stay Strong! So much love!"

Sac said they will have to move locations after facing such hate, but she wants to stay in McHenry County.

"People want us in McHenry County. Uprising is more than a bakery with vegan and gluten-free choices, it is a safe space. We will stay in McHenry County because that is my home. We are exploring new locations to move at a future date," Sac said.

Sac said no matter where they move, these boards full of love solace and solidarity from the community will be coming with them.

"In the interim, we will focus on the bakery and close the café in mid-April. We will use that space for private events and some retail products on consignment," Sac said. We still need community support to keep the business running. As long as our supporters continue to come to us for vegan, gluten-free, nut-free and custom bakery goods as well as catering, we will continue to serve them!"

Her message now?

"It's about taking that action and standing up for people, and using your power and your voice to help people along when they might not have it," she said.

Edit: I am retarded.
