I don't even like anime, and I can admit that Kill La Kill is badass. It's like Sailor Moon as written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. You'd think that a show which is an open, blatant parody of most of the themes of anime would be exempt from the stupidity of tumblr headcanons. If for no other reason than that it's target demographic isn't six-year-olds and so Tumblr should have no interest in it at all. Alas....

Didn't "headcanons" start out as just fan theories and interpretations about what was already going on in the show/movie/book? When did it turn into whatever terrifying alternate dimension their subnormal brain can conceive for these characters?

Tumblr. It started with tumblr. Before that if you had a headcanon you'd write some fanfic. If everybody liked it it became "fanon" i.e. fandom canon. Tumblr was where the randomly shouting bullshit with no explanation or anything became really popular for some reason.

Technically what tumblrs are doing isn't headcanons but alternate universes or AUs. But nobody gives a shit, it's autistic as fuck and anyone doing it needs to die as soon as possible.

As of today, tumblr is allowing you to delete replies from any post you make (not reblogs, thankfully). For those unfamiliar with the platform, replies are where you tack a comment onto a post without pasting the whole thing onto your blog. It's generally seen as a more low key way to have a discussion or to toss out a comment without having to commit to the post.

Naturally, tumblr is split between this feature, ranging from 'now I don't have to deal with negativity at all' to 'what the fresh hell is this censorship'.

Well not entirely. Headcanons started getting cancerous before tumblr in the journal roleplaying communities over sexuality/shipping/are they trans stuff. A lot of drama and wanking centered around people who didn't adhere to whatever fanon was saying was popular and 'right' too. Tumblr just made it a hundred times worse.
