Since the passing of Utah's Device Filter Amendments in March 2021, and more recently Louisiana's Act 440 in June 2022, there has been a slew of bills introduced by state legislators regarding the viewing and distribution of adult content. As of writing, there are about 22 of these types of bills whose deadlines to pass are in 2023. Some of them require the user to submit government ID for any website that contains a "substantial portion" of content "harmful to minors" (usually 33% as set by Louisiana's Bill). Others propose device level filters activated by default, which can also only be removed with government ID verification. Virginia, Mississippi, and Arkansas are all very close to having bills passed similar to Louisiana's Act 440.

This thread is being created to monitor the progress of these types of bills and discuss their possible outcomes. The nonprofit trade association for the porn industry, "Free Speech Coalition", has a webpage displaying the status of said bills:

Good.

Now also ban websites from having porn on unrestricted portions of the site.

Pornography is one of the most addictive and destructive substances man has ever created. Children should not unwittingly have unrestricted access to it from the time they’re able to write a Google search just because it makes your penis feel good.

I retract my statements. Please see my amended version below:

Good.

Death to pornographers.

What's even more disturbing is how despite how oblivious it's an issue Sex/Porn addiction aren't considered real illnesses.

Well, that’s horrifying.

I know plenty of people here are going to be cheering this on because porn, but I guarantee that if stuff like this becomes a thing, it’s only a matter of time before the same methods get used for any content somebody finds distasteful or objectionable, like anything branded “hate speech”.

Which, in an awful way, is kind of genius: We didn’t say you couldn’t say that, you just need to submit a valid form of government-issued identification in order to access the place where you can do so. You know, to protect the kids.

Oh, the libs will change it from porn to 'fake news' so that your browser will only show CNN and Huffpo forever. And you won't be approved for an N-word loicense.

Instead, they should do an awareness campaign for not letting kids browse until they are at least 14 or 15.

Just let them play online games with built in MP that doesn't need a browser, like it was in the Good Old Times.

I can see the law of unintended consequences having not horrible side effects here. It's not like its been proven companies treat private information with the upmost respect.

Remember when ever the government is doing something for "Children" It's trying to fuck you over. I get that this A&N/Happenings leans Conversative but really this is just going to sanitize the internet even more then it is and it wont just stay just to stop porn. It will slow expand until affects everything.

Wasn't the original argument for Roskomnadzor - protection of the public from CeePee?
Initially, it was a standard campaign for "safer Internet for children" - CP, and ExTrEmIsM were supposed to be axed first. Then, "drug propaganda" (Russian Encyclopedia Dramatica - Lurkmore - was blocked over having an article about MJ) and "suicide propaganda" were added. Porn sites (at least large-ish) require age verification or are blocked. Various political stuff was just blocked.
In parallel, Roskomnadzor have put DPI equipment at every ISP. They can and do block VPNs on a protocol level, they're blocking unbridged Tor, they've even issued their own HTTPS certificates (lol I ain't installing that shit nigga).
It's as close to the Great Firewall of China as it gets.

That 'most destructive substance' title stays on heroin if you ask me. Porn isn't even remotely on the same level as that brain rot from what I've seen.

I'd put it in the same boat as alcohol or nicotine in terms of its accessibility versus addictiveness, and so in that sense I actually don't mind the Feds trying to restrict it on principle. The problem I have with Federal enforcement here is how do you enforce the distribution online without going too far into restricting people's civil rights? As far as I know it sounds impossible.

Yeah I definitely favor going after the ones producing it rather than consumers. However, given theoretically anyone with a camera could make it, I think we really have to just target the consumption of porn.

I wonder if it would be a hard lock put on the OS by manufacturers - which could be removed by the device owner at a verified retailer. Or basically, by default the computer is set to “I am under 18, tell every website that I visit that the device has not been verified as being owned by a >18 year old”. If the owner wants that flagged removed, they either have to prove they’re 18 when they purchase the device, or go to like a best buy and show them ID to remove it.

If we're gonna go that route, I propose that instead of nerfing all devices, we just ban anyone under 18 from owning and using real ones. Instead, they'll only be permitted to use a device made by Fisher Price that has no camera and can only access Club Penguin, just like god intended.

And dont forget the farms itself, all because of a Hohoholocaust image

Thats not enough... we need more! just let a glowie watch everytime somebody wanks...
Shouldn't this be the parents' responsibility, in the first place?
In theory, facilitating the access to pornographic material by a minor is probably illegal already. But if you interpret that as anyone giving an unrestricted, unsupervised access to the Internet to a minor, that's basically 9/10 parents going to jail overnight.
The void in parental control opened by gen X parents who didn't know any better is basically impossible to close now.
