Sega - It's more than just Sonic Autism

Me: OK, NOW can we have a Skies of Arcadia remaster?!
SEGA: LOL no. Have a VR-only remake of an obscure Japanese arcade game. It's also exclusive to SoyStation VR as a double fuck-you.

SEGA is just trolling us SoA fans at this point.

Would a rerelease have a more feithful translation that is uncensored?
Sega did retranslate yakuza after the backlash
I'd say my perfect translation would be one that has elements of Klay Vorlick and Chris Luchich's original English translation only with the references to alcohol and the other stuff restored. Although i wouldn't lose too much sleep if a (non-pozzed) different team retranslated everything either. And there'll always be mods too (if this hypothetical remaster/remake comes out on PC).

It bugs me when there's no option for the original translation, that's why I still prefer the old Chrono Trigger. How hard would it have been to include both?

Yu Suzuki is working on a range of Virtua Fighter NFTs

SUZUKI CO-CREATED AND DIRECTED SEGA’S FIGHTING GAME SERIES FOR MANY YEARS

In a collaboration between Sukuzi and NFT firm OASYX, a total of 1,000 Virtua Fighter NFTs will be made available.

“This range of NFTs will include 11 characters from the first three Virtua Fighter games into OASYX’s creative worlds, creating a unique and exciting experience for new and old fans of Virtua Fighter alike,” said OASYX.

The NFTs “will serve as a base for future Metaverse avatars”, it added.

Virtua Fighter owner Sega has licensed the IP for the project, but the company itself doesn’t appear to be directly involved in it.

Yu Suzuki served as director on the Virtua Fighter series from its launch in 1993 until his departure from Sega in the late 2000s.

“During my time as a director at Sega, I initially developed Virtua Fighter using innovative 3D computer graphics technology, which was cutting-edge and industry-leading at the time,” he said in a statement.

“Since then, the Virtua Fighter series has grown to be loved by many players and continues to be supported by numerous fans today.

“Through my work supervising the development of OASYX’s unique worldview, I am delighted to combine innovative technology in the form of blockchain-based NFTs, with three titles from the Virtua Fighter series to create new entertainment for a wide range of gaming fans.”

Sega has previously indicated that it’s interested in exploring NFTs, but little has come of it.

Speaking last year in the wake of player criticism of other companies exploring the technology, Sega CEO Haruki Satomi indicated he would be willing to walk back on plans to create its own NFTs.

“In terms of NFT, we would like to try out various experiments and we have already started many different studies and considerations but nothing is decided at this point regarding P2E,” he said.

“There have been many announcements about this already including at overseas but there are users who show negative reactions at this point.

“We need to carefully assess many things such as how we can mitigate the negative elements, how much we can introduce this within the Japanese regulation, what will be accepted and what will not be by the users.

“Then, we will consider this further if this leads to our mission “Constantly Creating, Forever Captivating”, but if it is perceived as simple money-making, I would like to make a decision not to proceed.”

Isn't Yu Suzuki notorious for not actually being into video games, joining Sega because they gave the most vacation hours, and destroying the company with Shenmue? Why does he have anything to do with Sega at all anymore? Shenmue III wasn't even published by Sega.

For me he's the Space Harrier and Out Run guy, if his legacy is to be the Shenmue guy it's a bit unfortunate.

It's Official! Sega Poll Reveals Fans Want The Sega Saturn Mini Next

It appears the Sega Saturn was the clear winner with 88% of votes from respondents, with the Sega Dreamcast coming in second with 79%, and a potential third Mega Drive Mini earning 69%. The livestream is now over, but you can watch it back on YouTube here or see Gosokkyu's Twitter thread for the other highlights like game rankings.

Now. SEGA. Will you maybe finally read the fucking room and actually give the Saturn love for once, or will you just continue ignoring it and its stable of classics?

I would LOVE to hear their excuse for when they inevitably say they can't/won't. One excuse i can think of that they would probably go with is regards to Porting those games over due to how the saturn is coded would be hard work - Even though these games were already ported onto the PS2 for the "SEGA AGES" collection, so unless they lost the code, there's really no excuse for it. Hell, they can do what Sony did for the PS1 Mini and use an open-source emulator for the saturn (which there are a few)

i can see both the east and west getting completely different versions, with the west getting the short straw (as always with these kinds of things), specifically because there are many more japan saturn games than US/EU saturn games. This includes the 3rd party games, which regarding that, what would Sega be "allowed" to use for this collection? 2D Fighters for example, especially those from Capcom, shines GREATLY on the Saturn (as in near arcade perfect ports), which is what set itself apart from the Playstation, which couldn't handle the vs series, the alpha series, and even CPS3 games like JoJo Bizzare Adventure. Can SEGA use any of those? I know they used SSF2 for the Genesis Mini 2, but that doesn't count as Capcom ALWAYS re-releases that rom on Nintendo's Virtual Console platform (Wii, WiiU, 3DS had it).

Honestly, as a Sega fan from the Master System onwards but one who skipped the Saturn completely, I'd only get a Saturn Mini if I could get it in stores in Canada and not have to order it from Amazon Japan the way the Genesis Mini 2 was sold.

I also wouldn't bother with it if the emphasis is only on the 3D games since those Saturn 3D graphics, with a handful of exceptions like Panzer Dragoon and Nights into Dreams, have not aged well (and I still love how early Sega bare polygon 3D arcade games look going right back to the Model 1 so I'm not a total graphics snob, it's just that a lot of 3D Saturn games look ugly compared to their arcade counterparts). If they included some of the Sega superscaler arcade ports, that would be a plus.

If they deem a Saturn mini too risky then just release a damn compilation digitally. Stop fucking around already Sega, there's interest in these games.
Or just append more Saturn games to Dreamcast Collection.

Sega's a weird company. Remember Dreamcast Collection? The compilation of four games for Steam and Xbox 360? Its grown to 7 now, one of which is Nights Into Dreams, which isn't even a Dreamcast game. Just keep tacking 'em on, why not.

Sega Will Not Attend E3

"After careful consideration, we have decided not to participate in E3 2023 as an exhibitor," Sega told IGN. "We look forward to sharing more information on announced and unannounced projects in the future."

"Unannounced projects"?!

Please, daddy SEGA. I'm fucking begging you.

Honestly, aside from the novelty value of playing classic videogames in HDMI with a replica of the original console's controls, I'd rather buy console or company-specific game collections than mini-consoles (or have individual classic games on Steam or some other digital storefront for only a couple of dollars each).

I do have the original Steam Dreamcast collection and it leaves a lot to be desired (don't really care about Space Channel 5, don't really care about Sega Bass Fishing, I want the version of Crazy Taxi with Offspring, Bad Religion, and KFC, and, eh, look, it's Sonic Adventure). Of course, I still have a working Dreamcast so I don't even need an inferior version of Crazy Taxi anyway but it's ridiculous that they didn't include some of the more obvious Dreamcast titles like Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue, games I don't have physical copies of and still haven't played.

tbh I don't even know what people are thinking would go on a Saturn mini, like what a full lineup of games would even look like. There are a bunch of "almost arcade perfect practically kinda" arcade ports but Sega already has a mini arcade thing and so does Capcom for that matter. If they really want to make themselves useful, give me a motion control for lightgun/fishing games.

Plus yeah they don't even want to mess with Saturn code, which is why the Panzer Dragoon remake happened, and it was poorly received anyway.

Shenmue's on Steam if you didn't know it, it's just not in that collection. Rez too, and probably some of the other big names.

The funny thing is that the Sega Ages line on Switch was cancelled due to low sales (and never ported to anything else) but they turned around and put a lot of the same games on the minis. They might make a better profit hawking LIMITED EDITION COLLECTOR'S ITEM soytoys than Steam/console ports. Apparently people think they're getting ripped off to pay $5 for an old game even if it's had a lot of extra work put into porting it but they'll still drop $500 to preorder a doodad if it comes with stickers or whatever.

Getting the first party games out of the way, since those are the easiest:
  • Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic R
  • Nights Into Dreams (MAYBE Christmas Nights as a bonus of some sort)
  • Virtua Cop 1 and/or 2
  • Virtua Fighter 1 and/or 2
  • Fighting Vipers
  • Fighters Megamix
  • Bug! and Bug Two!
  • Sega Rallly Championship
  • Clockwork Knight 1 and 2
  • Shining Force 3
  • Sega Worldwide Soccer 97/98
  • Golden Axe The Duel
Third Party:
  • Saturn Bomberman
  • Whatever 2D Capcom fighter they can get their hands on
  • Outlaws of The Lost Dynasty (a Data East 2D fighter that was on the ST-V arcade board and has an enchanced port on the saturn)
  • Speaking of ST-V, anything from this list

Saturn Mini:
Expectations: Jrpgs
Reality: Arcade Ports

I bet the Japanese version will get all the goodies (Shining Force 3 with all scenarios, Princess Crown and Sakura Wars) while western version will have to do with fighters and rail shooters.

Replace some of these ports with Deep Fear, Astal and Guardian Heroes.

Sega Explains Why Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection Costs $80

IGN: Based on some early attention on price point, why $80 to purchase the collection?
Sega of America: Yes, the collection is available for purchase at $80. With this purchase, players will get 30+ hours of gameplay for Etrian Odyssey HD and 50+ hours for Etrian Odyssey II and III, plus free DLC portrait sets of popular characters from other ATLUS IP when they pre-order. That is a lot of content and gameplay that we think players will be very excited for in the first three games of the remastered series for Nintendo Switch and Steam.
That's why Minecraft is $80. And Hollow Knight. And Dead Cells. And the Xenoblade games. Yup. Makes sense. Worst part? It's 8,980¥ in Japan. While that's still about 1,000¥ more then most releases, it's only about $65 USD.

I'd be in favor of a Saturn Mini only because it'll get more eyes and more people to see how great of a system it was. I've already seen quite a bit of Saturn retrospective love the past few years due to it finally being emulatable with Mednafen; which for years it wasn't and the only way to play it reliably was on real hardware.

As for what I'd like to see:
- NiGHTS (and Christmas Nights)
- Sonic R
- Burning Rangers
- Astal
- Enemy Zero
- Deep Fear
- Die Hard Arcade
- Fighters Megamix
-Guardian Heroes
- Magic Knight Rayearth
- Mega Man 8
-Mr. Bones
-Panzer Dragoon trilogy
And some weird wild cards that were Japan only:
- Black/Matrix
-Princess Crown
-Bulk Slash
-SEGATA SANSHIRO: Shinken Yuugi
