One of my nieces has just had her son diagnosed. Apparently that entire side of the family can't figure out where it came from. That's why, if for whatever reason you decide to cut contact to the majority of your biological family, you get their medical history first. Autism women's groups are full of women who had kids that were diagnosed, and were then diagnosed themselves as adults.

A disorder shouldn't warrant a diagnosis if it isn't actually causing any difficulty in a person's day-to-day life. Thats the trouble with the increasing rate of autism diagnoses I think, people aren't allowed to just be weirdos anymore without getting the label of "autism" slapped onto them. Come to think of it, that may also be the case with being trans.

The flip side here is that a lot of DSM diagnoses are predicated on whether or not they cause distress to the patient.

You hear voices in your head that tell you you're heckin' awesome and you need to keep being you? Not necessarily a problem.

You think all of humanity is trash and you have developed a whole philosophy and moved out to the woods to expand on your thoughts? You want this for you, okay.

You spin out once a month and spend a weekend fucking randos and buying clothes? If you have fun and you can afford it, why should this change?

You find the label of "woman" restrictive and you want to wander around town looking like a man? If that makes you feel happy and secure with yourself, I don't see why not.

There's a lot of behavior and ideology that is diagnosable if the person is upset with what is happening.

The problem with troonery, as I see it, is that these people seem profoundly miserable in a way that doesn't seem tacked to whether or not they're accepted as their chosen "gender." Or maybe tacking it to acceptance is itself a problem.

It really feels like it should be a mental diagnosis if it causes the patient distress.

Frankly, I think there’s more to this. As with all couples who troon out, I find myself thinking, being trans should be a rare condition, what are the chances that two people unaware that they have that condition should meet?
