The economics are complicated, with them being in an island area full of Caribbean resorts so they will have to be better than the competition. Additionally, these smaller resorts would need to be more expensive so instead of serving the middle to upper middle class your clients are now mostly upper class. With these resorts being smaller that would mean less need for the service industry to support large resorts resulting in a loss of jobs. They could go the Singapore / Hong Kong route in economic development then try to find some niche sector like tech but that takes generations of educational investment and they would need to compete with the US state of Florida and territory of Puerto Rico.

But don't pay any attention to people telling you that your socialist plan is shit.

I've had the growing suspicion that these urbanists would like to live the full Cottagecore tradcath life, but can't because they associate non-urban life with bigotry and backwardness that goes against their sensibilities. They force themselves into a living situation that makes them unhappy because of what they believe the alternative is, and they believe that there is some utopian world where their urban lifestyle would be actually good and pleasant.

Bicyclist killed in Bloomfield identified as former City of Pittsburgh intern​

Alex Yerkey, 26, of Bethel Park, was shot and killed Sunday, March 26, 2023 while riding his bike in Bloomfield, Pittsburgh police said.​

Pittsburgh officials on Tuesday mourned the loss of a former city intern who was shot and killed while riding his bike through Bloomfield.

Alexander Yerkey, 26, whose home address was listed as Bethel Park, died shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday after being shot in the head, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner confirmed. The man charged in connection with his killing is in Allegheny County Jail.

A witness told police they saw Yerkey bicycling and, after he turned onto Pearl Street, heard screaming and a gunshot, according to a criminal complaint. The witness walked around the corner and saw the shooter standing over Yerkey with a gun in his right hand.

Mayor Ed Gainey described Yerkey as “a kind, gentle, and thoughtful person who was passionate about making Pittsburgh a better place for everyone.”

On LinkedIn, Yerkey listed his current job as a transportation planning associate for SB Thomas & Associates in Pittsburgh.

According to the LinkedIn profile, after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020, Yerkey served as a traffic engineering intern for the City of Pittsburgh from January 2022 through March 2022. There, he created project pages on the city’s engagePGH site for traffic calming projects, among other duties.

“Pittsburgh, please join me in prayer for the family and friends of Alex Yerkey, whose life was taken in a senseless act of gun violence,” Gainey said in a statement. “He left a lasting impression during his time as both an intern and a consultant for the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, and today we are grieving this loss while also feeling gratitude for having known him.”

Gainey said city officials are providing “help and support” to the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure as its employees process the sudden death.

A person identified as Matthew Nehr started a GoFundMe page this week to help pay for Yerkey’s unexpected funeral expenses; that page had raised more than $31,000 of its $35,000 goal on Tuesday afternoon.

Nehr, as well as Yerkey’s family, could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

An obituary said that Yerkey graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2015. He had a bachelor’s degree from Pitt in urban planning.

“He had a love of music like no other, especially the guitar and bass,” the obituary said. “Alex is also survived by his faithful feline companion, Lou. Alex was very active in many sports, including baseball, roller hockey, and ice hockey. He will be remembered for his sweet, genuine smile, and his willingness to help others. He loved and cared for his friends and family deeply.”

Pittsburgh police said the ShotSpotter system registered several alerts for shots fired around 2:35 p.m. Sunday in the area of Corday Way and Pearl Street. A witness interviewed by police said the shooter also shot at them, according to the criminal complaint.

Police said they arrested a man who fit witness descriptions — Lukas Kislak, 33, of Braddock — on Penn Avenue after the shooting. He now faces charges of criminal homicide, recklessly endangering the life of another person, and two firearms counts. Police have not released any possible motive for the shooting.

Yerkey’s sister told WTAE that he was living in Bloomfield and riding his bike to a baseball field for a weekly game when he was shot. She told the station he was found dead about a block from his home. A backpack, with his baseball bat inside, was next to him.

Kislak was denied bail Monday and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 12.

I know it wouldn't have helped, but that's why I have my revolver. Even a nice area can hide a thug, a killer. A public servant should take more precautions. Even 5 shots in a snubnosed .38 like mine is a good enough deterrent in pretty much any case just by presence alone. And just personal opinion, as a public servant, going on a bike ride, he should have had body armor. Even a soft plate level II would have saved his ass from a 9mm hollowpoint to the chest.

We have no evidence that Jason has even done hard work a day in his life. His LinkedIn, vague as it may be, is mostly tech-related stuff detached from reality and while admittedly you might leave out a four-month stint at a fast food restaurant on LinkedIn, I think it is safe to say that Jason has never worked a job where he had to mop a floor, clean a toilet, or perform any heavy labor.

He's that much out of touch with reality that thinking you can buy fresh bakery bread everyday is because of "walkable cities" and not being wealthy.

Based Nips understand the need for balance and moderation. There is nothing wrong with having both cars and bikes. Producing such garages for both vehicle types is actually a great solution, having that be a alternative to parking space means better flow of traffic and as such more space for both cars, pedestrians and bikes.

In addition to the bike and car underground, the one I saw more commonly in Japan was puzzle parking. Similar automated solution for high density parking, but probably cheaper than the underground ones.

The way Redditors are trying to frame it, he was taken out as if the perp was hiding in a warehouse waiting for him to pass by, a la the Kennedy assassination, but instead as this newspaper article indicates that the guy may have tried to mug him.

I looked up the area where he was shot. It's basically a one-way alleyway with some tagged-up signs and depressing-looking townhomes. The perp is white but looks like a homeless crack addict.
