Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

This old 4koma meme always gets me smiling whenever it gets referenced in mangas
Izumi Tomoki should also consider working as an art director for a horror game project if ever given the chance.

Probably Unpopular Opinion but DIC's music for Sailor Moon honestly fits the show way more
Maybe for season one as the OST is straight out of the 1970s. The disco music is intentional as the Sailor Moon composer was inspired by the BGM for Charlie's Angels.

When Sailor Moon S premiered on Toonami in the summer of 2000 I was unaware of the changes DiC had made in the previous season and was taken a back by the BGM change. I thought the "new" music fitted the show better than what was used in seasons 1 and 2. Nothing DiC produced holds a candle to the Outer Senshi theme.

The Dungeon Meshi manga is about to end, and with the anime adaptation by Trigger incoming I got to say It's one of the best takes on classical "generic" fantasy (I know the creator based it on CRPGs, shut up.) that i've seen in a long time.
Weird how Japan treats western canon with more respect and dignity than pretty much anything released this side of the world after the 90s

How is Black Clover anime? Show it will be in a few weeks on my family Netflix, I think I remember some people here saying it was underappreciated.

I'm wondering whether to read now or just wait for it to end. I've understood some massive events happened over the last four years since I read it. Think I dropped off when the party met the Elven Squad.

The creator of the manga is a huge D&D autist which helped a lot with fleshing out the world and characters and lore. If the anime is bad I'll be legimately disheartened.
Not to be that guy but is it actually going to be an anime or something made by the west which they slapped the anime label on for the sake of marketing.
It IS an anime. It's being made by Science SARU (Eizouken, Tatami Time Machine Blues, Devilman Crybaby, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl)

If you like the Shonen battle genre or specifically Naruto, One Piece and Bleach, you'll most likely enjoy Black Clover because it literally rips a lot of the cool aspects from those shows wholesale and puts it's own spin on them. Personally, it's become one of my favorites and it's one of the few I actually read weekly. It has plenty of questionable and just downright dumb writing decisions, it's very flawed but it's never boring and it's always extremely fun. Animation-wise, the action scenes look amazing. The manga is great too but the anime really does just enhance the shit out of some scenes with it's animation. Black Clover's storytelling is extremely to the point and very minimalist and I guess the anime staff had a problem with that at first because the first 12 episode or so are mostly filler and it really fucked up the experience for a lot of people when it first started, I myself dropped it within this time and wrote it off as garbage, not knowing almost everything I hated was anime-original shit so just be wary of those first 12 episodes, maybe read the first volume of the manga instead because a lot of the filler is mixed in with canon material so there's not entire filler episodes for the most part.

Also yeah, it's underappreciated. It's a proper battle shonen manga that actually feels like it was targeted at men meanwhile nobody really talks about it and it doesn't rank all that high in Shonen Jump. I feel like manga like MHA and Demon Slayer being top rankers over Black Clover kinda shows how it's gone from being for mostly men to being for everyone which is something I'm not too big a fan of but I feel like Black Clover is carrying the torch of old Shonen Jump even if it's flawed and not as popular.

Partially yes but it appears to be more of a co-production between the West and Japan like ThunderCats 2011 where much of the marketing boasted about the anime studio that animated the show.

Scott Pilgrim to ruin a generation of women weebs. Which is already a bad generation to begin with.

The Yuasa Masaaki/Science SARU worship is getting wildly out of control.
Or there will be new folks that will complain about Scott Pilgrim because of how toxic the narrative of "kick ass and get the girl" or some shit. Or that Scott is shaming Ramona for sleeping with others. Or even complain they got Knives and her dad wrong by having them use Japanese weapons instead of Chinese ones.

Imagine if someone set out with the goal of, rather than making the best animanga they possibly could, making the most not-bad animanga possible. I wouldn't call any part of it great, but it's greatest strength is that it's never terrible, at least as far as the plot goes. It does have several streaks of being very good, and even the animation does have its strong points, but you also have stuff like episode 63 where they ran out of time to animate it so they literally just threw in the animatics because they had details they needed but couldn't get done. It's obvious a ton of effort went into that episode but it mostly just ends up being a really impressive nightmare to look at.

It does have my favorite 'last second powerup' system. The characters generally only get stronger through hard work with a couple of exceptions, but if they're in an unwinnable situation that isn't just a matter of the enemy being 10x stronger than they are their grimoire will come up with a new spell to help them out. The captain of the main squad that the story follows, Yami, is basically a retired shonen protagonist who's already had his adventures and has this figured out so rather than bothering to train/lead them he's just good at throwing his members into situations where they'll end up against the wall and he knows when to bail them out

The anime does have one problem at the start but it gets better about 20 episodes in. I'm not saying 'give it 20 episodes and it gets good' because it was enjoyable enough for me to be interested more of less immediately but for the first 20 or so episodes Asta allcaps basically every single line and it can be hard to listen to. I've heard the dub is better in this regard but loldubs

The anime is a bit of a mixed bag, but it is kinda kino at times. Mind you, most of the filler, apart from Devil Worshipper arc, is canon due to being written by Tabata himself. The anime, specially the OPs & EDs foreshadow a lot of manga.

Manga is sheer kino rn, would recommend.

God help the zoomers.

It's jarring to me that the supposed generic battle shonen has such a great world-building & foreshadowing.

There's a way more updated version of this collage somewhere, but I can't find it, despite seeing it. Hell, I can't even find it on my phone.

Also, the 2nd last chapter from now, Chapter 355, was foreshadowed too.
