Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

Why is this being shilled so highly?

Part of it is that Hasbro needs a W and they have something that might help with that. I think the other part is there hasn't been a fantasy movie in ages and even though D&D is pretty much fantasy super heroes, it's not something with fucking super heroes. I might go to the theater that sells beer and chicken wings and make a night of it tbh.

I might be running another one shot. This time VTT and with a spy theme. I'm dubious if it will actually happen, but who knows.

Once again, game system might be an issue. As perfect as Savage Worlds is for this, character creation is always a problem. I'm tempted to run a OSR system called Knave. Mainly because character creation is so quick. Those that want to get into the nitty gritty of it can without the game slowing to a crawl, and those who are less crunch orientated can do what is essentially "3d6 in order". I'm not sure where I'll get the weapons from yet. I might just steal some damage values from SW, Spycraft, or 5e. Not sure how I'll handle martial arts, if I include them at all.

I don't know if any of this is a good idea, but it's what I'm doing.

From what I hear the movie is projected to bomb worse then Shazam 2. WotC and Hasbro were so stupid and full of themselves that they thought this movie could compete against John Wick 4 and Super Mario Bros. The smart move would have been to have the movie premier in May but as we all know WotC and Hasbro are not known for their smart business decisions. Also, how do I know that the movie will bomb? Well Hasbro dismantled the production company that made the movie showing that Hasbro has no confidence that the movie will even break even. Plus the movie is seated between John Wick 4 and Super Mario Bros. Two movies that have a lot of hype around them and are projected to make a lot of money. Super Mario Bros is projected to make over a billion. Fucking stupid for Hasbro and WotC to have a movie be sandwich in between those two movies releases.

Also, goddamn does the movie look annoying and insufferable. The trailer was just filled to the brim with jokes, quips and quirky dialogue and characters. It is obvious that the movie was inspired by Critical Role but judging from Marvel's recent failings I think people are sick to death now of the quirky, quippy jokes and Millennial writing. I think people are looking for entertainment that is more grounded and takes it self seriously. Case in point Avatar 2 and John Wick 4 success. Hopefully, with Marvel bombing and the D&D movie bombing, maybe 2023 will be the death of Millennial writing.

The rainbow might be well-deserved. Already hearing the consoomers enjoying it.

But will it make a profit? Remember, WotC and Hasbro were stupid enough to have the movie come out a week before Super Mario Bros. Mario is projected to make over a billion at the box office. I've been hearing stories of people saying that opening weekend at their theater are sold out for Mario. Plus, Mario comes out Easter weekend. A lot of parents will be taking their kids to see the movie Easter weekend as a means to spend family time with the kids while lonely manchildren with no family will be seeing the movie that weekend too as they have nothing better to do for Easter. Meanwhile the D&D movie is projected to bomb and even lose money at the box office. Doesn't matter if the movie is good or gets rave reviews, it bombs it bombs and all WotC and Hasbro will care about is if they make a profit, which they won't. Maybe WotC shouldn't have burned their bridges with their costumers and have the Jewish writer for their movie mouth off about how he enjoyed emasculating the male leads in the movie given that the majority of D&D costumers are white males. Everything WotC and Hasbro could have done wrong they did.

I'd normally agree, as I've been seeing the same.
But jesus christ, opening against John Wick 4? What were they thinking?

And if Hasbro killed the production company before the film even premeired....that's not a good sign.

If Hasbro and WotC were smart they would had the movie go up against The Marvels. Not only would the movie made a profit but also would have beaten Disney at the box office. The ads would have wrote themselves. All they would have to say was; "People, what would you rather see? A fun, quirky adventure inspired by the hit sensation that is Critical Role where a band of misfits save the world or suffer seeing Brie Larson's flat ass and even flatter acting?"
Shit, people would have gone to see the D&D movie not out of love for D&D but to spite Disney and Brie Larson. Instead WotC and Hasbro thought they were hot shit enough to compete against Super Mario Bros. and Nintendo. Only a company full of delusional retards would think of going against something as big and popular as Mario and Nintendo. Goes to show the utter delusion and poor management that is plaguing both Hasbro and WotC.

Update on that "Tabletop News" Kickstarter I mentioned earlier, I'm kind of fascinated by it because it looks like they're going to try to do a G4 thing and fail miserably. They've got 74k out of 150k with 12 days left (and they want way more than the goal).

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/watchtabletop/tabletopnews

What's interesting is a comment - the guy running it revealed that the "episodes" will actually be 10-15 minutes long, which makes me question the amount of money they're asking for even more. Also someone suggested they post the pilot and he said they didn't actually shoot a "pilot" and that they made an error in the description.

There's probably a specialized Modern/Spyguy OSR somewhere. I know Silent Legions is modern (though it's horror) and there's a Stars Without Number but Cyberpunk coming out soon (With a preview edition available wherever).
If you have time to read and do some work in the VTT there's a dedicated espionage RPG called Black Seven that focuses on stealth system I forgot the details about but I know it was pretty light.

It's not a terrible movie, but the people WotC/Hasbro needed to see it are saying 'Yeah, we're not going to watch this if it means giving money to WotC'. I am seeing, time and again, people telling me, 'I'd like to watch it but fuck Hasbro and Wizards.'

(For the record, I didn't pay either.)

It astonishes me how fucking tone deaf they were. Did they not realize there would be repercussions for pissing off their fanbase?

EDIT: Releasing against Super Mario Bros. is one thing. It could probably hang in there against SMB cause that looks mediocre.

Releasing against John Wick 4? Uh... that's NOT a big brain move. JW4's been fucking hyped for the last couple months. It'll annihilate D&D. It's UHF all over again.

Hey! Don't compare Weird Al's decent movie against this fucking trash.
LOL. UHF is pretty good. It just had the most amazingly stupid release date ever.

Who the fuck thought releasing it against Batman ('89), Ghostbusters II, Licence to Kill, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Lethal Weapon 2, Dead Poets Society, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade thought it was a good idea?

Same logic here. Why release against fucking John Wick?

SMB would be a high-stakes gamble. I've heard the SMB is aggressively Dreamworks mediocre; SMB could bomb and then you'd have a winner. JW4 is box office suicide. They have put out 3 three movies with a minimal dip in quality by focusing on revenge-driven slick action and not tranny rights or endless quips, and zero signs the 4th is anything except more of the same - no shake ups, no cast drama, no writer walkouts. And they put enough time between the films to not over saturate their audience.

The not giving wizards money is why I'm not going even thinking about bothing to think about seeing the movie until it hits Included with Prime or Basic cable and even then, it looks 100% missable. I don't care enough to even put in the effort to hoist the black flag, and its refreshing to see a good number of other people still feel the same way.

@RangerBoo had the big-brain play which was run it against the Marvels. It'd also put a little more time after WotC's two big fuckywuckies and get more consoomers to forget.

That was my thought too. I wonder what color the sky is in Hasbro's world.

The weird part is the movie's not bad but it's not exactly breaking any new ground. Amusingly, it's not near as 'woke' as I'm sure the DEI retards would want. There's some really solid SFX and story angles, but the overall plot is pretty much paint-by-numbers. You'd think they'd send it out against weaker opposition, not against John fucking Wick.

Oh no. There is a ton of hype right now with SMB. Unlike D&D and WotC everyone, even people in third world countries, know who Mario and Nintendo are. Video game adaptations are in a renaissance right now. Not to mention that the movie comes out Easter weekend. Families will in droves be going to see the movie with their kids as a means to spend time with the family on Easter weekend. It doesn't matter if the movie is mediocre, it will be making bank. Why WotC and Hasbro thought it would be a good idea to go against SMB is beyond me. They really thought that since masses of people were playing D&D during COVID that they were now as big as Nintendo. COVID however just prove to be a fluke for them. Not to mention them pissing off every side of their customer base and doubling down didn't help matters either.

I find it funny that WotC, before the movie came out, told their primary audience, which is straight, cis, white males, that they don't want them anymore. That they don't want their money anymore as they are too boring and problematic and that they instead want their main audience to be gays, trannies, blacks and women. Despite what most West Coast libtards think the LGBTQ only make up about 3% of the population. Every member of the LGBTQ could have gone to see this movie and it wouldn't have made a profit. Blacks? Nah, most black people don't really like D&D or high fantasy in general. They find it lame and gay. Not to mention that black people find D&D to be an expensive hobby and not worth the time and money.

Women? Well there has been an increase of female fans over the years but that is only because of Critical Role. A lot of women love Critical Role and Critical Role, as of late, has been trying to appeal more and more to the female demographic, at least judging from the book covers of the Critcal Role books I've seen at my local Barnes & Noble. However, most women don't really like playing D&D. Gary Gygax talked about this decades ago. He stated while women love the role playing aspect they didn't like the action, adventure, violence or game play. If this was a Critical Role movie I think a sizable female audience would have gone to see the movie but a D&D movie that isn't Critical Role and not staring the characters that they have grown attached too? That is a hard pass.

Ironically the audience that would have seen this movie and gave it repeat viewings is the audience who WotC don't want and burned their bridge with. Straight, cis white males. I hope business schools years from now make thesis's and write papers about WotC and the D&D movie and the consequences of what happens when you tell the customer base that made you what you are to fuck off and instead chase after a customer base that doesn't exist.
