I don't think it will hard to prove he knew and ordered it. I think that's almost a slam dunk - and Trump should be careful not to go too crazy with denials because they have sufficient evidence to find him guilty. Worse than these 34 counts would actually be caught lying in court - that would factually be worse than the penalties he is facing, so he needs to listen to his council and STFU and not lie.

But this is about the equivalent in Presidential terms of retroactively handing out a speeding ticket to an ex-President. Yes, we all technically committed "an offense" on taxes or records at some point but this isn't a giant scheme they've uncovered to hide millions, defraud tax payers or rob someone else.

It's a nothing burger and the Judge will see it as that too and hand out a very minimal penalty for this.

I am no fan of Trump, but I do know a pathetic matter when I see it. So he covered up and hushed up a story and made up accounting to cover his tracks - that is not a particularly dramatic "crime" and as always with crimes we must find a victim in all this. I am not seeing a real victim here or an overly indulging person who benefitted financially from the "crime".

Trump won't beat it but he doesn't have to - the penalty will be a slap on the Wrist and frankly, I think the Judge is going to be a little hostile at the PROSECUTION in all this for bringing to the court a fairly mundane matter.

The only consequence of this of any importance is that Trump will have to resubmit his tax return with an amendment to cover the payment. Not exactly the stuff of movies. I am disappointed with this indictment.

It does look like an open and shut white collar crime, and he personally signed the checks (lol).

The elevation to felony is the interesting one - I was skeptical about this too, but it does sound like there’s things on the NY statute that would qualify. Plenty of toe-holds for the Trump lawyers to cling on to, also.

Would wingers have burnt the fucking country to the ground had Hilary been accused of a fraction of this and then won the election? Absolutely yes.

I’m still expecting the espionage stuff to be much heavier though.

The serious angles I picked up are election fraud. Deceiving the voters. That’s not what’s being charged, but it is the enabling crime.
Secondly, like Bragg said, they take business records seriously, being the business capital of the world. I think the judge will agree on that.

I agree if it was Hilary or Biden they would call it the crime of the century; but from where I stand I'll separate the "two wrongs make a right" argument and stick with my assessment of this. Trump ought to be careful though because once you have a conviction of fraudulent behavior with business records there are consequences to be had particularly with the IRS who may be allowed to look deeper into things they weren't previously as well as the state to call up records and audits. A conviction would mean a subpoena fest that made the previous ones look like appetizers.

But let us be frank, we want to see Trump hang for what he did that was treasonous to the country (election fraud and possibly foreign kickbacks), and not really for this, if we are honest about it.

I appreciate the snack from he DA,, I really do, but I still find it a disappointing snack and I hunger for a main course that lives up to the promise.
