The fee is collected by tv licensing (administered by capita), then paid into the consolidated tax fund. The government then allocates funding to the BBC, as well as funding Freesat and freeview from the same allocation. It's a tax. They just play word games with it.

The BBC licence fee is a tax, according to the British government. It's paid into public sector current receipts and paid out to the BBC. Calling it a "fee" is just a political trick to justify the taxation. Clearly state-funded. I hate to say it, but Twitter has it right.

I love the sheer unadulterated temper tantrum it's caused just to label the world's most obvious state-affiliated media, where you literally have to pay a tax just to own a TV and it directly funds it, as "state-affiliated media," when the BBC is literally the definitive example of such media.

I do find it amusing with the legions of low rent basement journalists losing their fucking minds because a checkmark that was bestowed on them by some tech tranny now costs $8. The "external source" links to a category at the world's most trusted encyclopedia. Yes that's right Musk is naively deferring to the objective editors at Wikipedia. Wikipedia has quickly (over the last few hours) added a new paragraph to the category page explaining that NPR and the BBC are not at all government-funded:
Note: Though publicly-funded broadcasters may receive support from government sources, they are not necessarily government-funded. Notably, NPR reports "On average, less than 1% of NPR's annual operating budget comes in the form of grants from CPB and federal agencies and departments."
