taliban really aren't anybodys rivals tbh, all they (and their predecessor organisations) ever really wanted was to rule afghanistan as they see fit and be free from foreign (first russian, then US) occupation

I ain't gonna derail too much but talibans were definitely seen as terrorists and threat to the western world so while word 'rival' might not be 100% accurate, they were definitely seen as enemies of the US.
Problem with US war in afghanistan was the classic issue where american government stupidly assumed that bringing democracy to the country is enough to make its citizens suddenly love western ways of life and USA. This was also what ultimately killed Nazi Germany in the USSR offensive: they came as invaders rather than liberators.

the one and only terrorist thing the taliban ever did (that affected the world outside of their mountain shithole in central asia) was give shelter to bin laden and refuse to hand him over to america after 9/11 (they did this for him because he had previously spent years fighting side by side with afghan mujahideen against the soviet occupation)
