I wanna revisit this comparison I made:

Diane Downs was a woman back in the '80s who was obsessed with a married man and hated her kids for tying her down. So she drove them out to a lonely stretch of road in Oregon, shot them, then shot herself in the arm and made up a bogus story about a creepy strange man shooting them for no reason.

This smirk she's making is when she's being interviewed on TV. There, she is talking about one of her kids bleeding to death. She loved the attention she was getting from the media, and that people were buying her tall tale in which she's a heroine.

Similarly, Pat is talking to the media about how much danger he and Nikki are in, and smiling about it. He likes the attention he's getting from the swatting, and if he's swatting himself, then he is also getting a kick out of lying to everyone.

Diane and Pat are so much alike. Both are attention whores. Both have Protagonist Syndrome and Dunning-Kruger. Both think they are smarter than everyone else. Both hate their kids and wanted to kill them.

And both cannot help but tell on themselves.
