BOWDOIN, Maine —
A 34-year-old man is facing charges for the murder of four people found dead in a home in Bowdoin. Shortly after the discovery of the deceased, gunfire erupted on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, injuring three drivers.

Maine State Police arrested Joseph Eaton, of Bowdoin, charging him with murder but not revealing details on whether he was facing charges for the shooting on the interstate.

Investigations began Tuesday morning when police were called to a home on Augusta Road in Bowdoin. When they arrived, they discovered four people dead inside.

A neighbor told Maine's Total Coverage a husband and wife lived at the home, however, officials have not identified those who died.

Around 10:30 a.m., after the discovery in Bowdoin, reports began to come in of cars being hit by gunfire on I-295 near exits 15 and 17/East Main Street in Yarmouth.

The southbound section of the interstate was quickly shut down in the area as a large police presence descended upon the scene.

In total, three people were shot while driving along the highway. Of those three, one person remains in critical condition.

Officials have not yet given an update on that person’s condition, nor revealed any identities of the victims.

Maine's Total Coverage reporter Terry Stackhouse was on the scene where two vehicles could be seen in front of a number of police cruisers.

One of the vehicles appeared to have multiple bullet holes in the front windshield.

At some point, officials say a person was detained for the shooting and has been interviewed. It is unclear if that person was Eaton.

Initially, authorities were searching for a second possible person of interest, as around a dozen officers in tactical gear took to the woods near the parked cars.

Maine State Police later said they were not looking for a second person but ask those who may have witnessed anything at either incident to call them at 207-624-7076.

Wednesday morning, authorities were back on the scene at the home in Bowdoin, taping off the area of the quadruple homicide as they continued to collect evidence.

BOWDOIN, Maine —
We are learning more about the man arrested and charged with the murder of four people, including his parents, in Bowdoin.

Police arrested 34-year-old Joseph Eaton after the discovery of four bodies inside a home on Augusta Road on Tuesday.

That investigation was later linked to the eruption of gunfire on I-295 in Yarmouth, injuring three drivers.

Eaton's criminal history dates back to 2008, in Kansas. His case files note he had been charged for the burglary of a home in 2008, sentenced in 2009, then released in 2010.

In May 2018, the 34-year-old from Bowdoin was sentenced to three years in jail on three counts of aggravated assault of a first responder, and wrongful possession of a firearm in Nassau County, Florida.

He was later released on Feb. 15, 2021.

Less than a month later, Eaton was sentenced on assault charges in Maine. That sentencing took place on March 1, 2021.

He was released from the Maine Correctional Center on April 14 of this year, four days before bodies were discovered in a home in Bowdoin.

His criminal record would prohibit him from owning a gun.

More from another news source:

Maine shooting spree suspect Joseph Eaton allegedly confessed to killing his parents and another couple at a home before opening fire on an interstate.

Police offered an update on the deadly rampage at a press conference on Wednesday.

Officials said 34-year-old Mr Eaton admitted to shooting four people who were found dead at a home in Bowdoin on Tuesday morning - including his parents Cynthia, 62, and David, 66. The other two victims, Patricia and Robert Eger, owned and lived at the home.

Mr Eaton then allegedly drove to Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, where he began shooting at cars. Three people were injured by that gunfire: Sean Halsey and his children, Justin Halsey and Paige Halsey.

Authorities did not offer any details about a motive but said the killings at the home were targeted and the highway shooting was random.

Hours before the highway rampage, Mr Eaton posted a sobbing Facebook video speaking about his “trauma” and “being molested”, The Independent can reveal.

Records also showed Mr Eaton had more than half a dozen criminal convictions – and was released from jail just four days before the killings.
He apparently posted on Facebook earlier this week about having been allegedly molested in the past.
