I have to imagine a part of it is that he just got into an argument with Jon and now the producers are clearly showing they like Jon and don't want him crying the bathroom. Could be that this night was just the final boil over a bunch of emotional stress that came in peaks and valleys. Plus since the producers are already playing good cop now for jon, its probably a good time to talk to them about ones feelings since they're probably more receptive.

Jon is the protagonist of this show. Whatever happens, I hope sam keeps up with him.

He is not a protagonist. He is the retard who gets controlled by other people (Sam, Tate, Lettie, clerics,.. ) and believes he has agency. That being said, he is an important source of content, but not fit to survive in an environment in which the dark triade traits rule.
