So when his intellect is challenged, he just throws out childish insults, because those insults probably work on him - Darwin Awards are the height of sophisticated comedy for Shane, so he thinks they will own other people because that's all he knows and he doesn't have the mental capacity to consider the other person's perspective. When they don't work, he genuinely can't think of anything and it sort of throws his brain out of gear. The only way he can cope at that point is to dehumanise his opponent - if they don't think like Shane, they must be evil Nazis, inhuman cartoon villains.

Yes he is egotistical and malicious, but those things are just consequences of severe stupidity and a very unsophisticated mind. It also explains why he's acted exactly the same way for 20 years - his mind simply stopped developing. I don't think he has even noticed that the world has changed a great deal since 2003 - I guess when you spend all your time indoors playing videogames you lose track of that kind of thing because to you, every day is the same, and, in Shane's limited mind, if he hasn't changed neither has anything else. It's a weird form of solipsism - Shane is the world, so when the world is not like Shane, he has to project identities on to anonymous people. He can't interpret what kind of people they are by their words or values, he's too dim to do that, so he just bases his judgments on their avatars.
