Politicking isn't allowed at the polling place. Tell them to shut it or get out. That was my job last election. I think they called it Poll sheriff duty. was a pretty easy way to get 200 bucks for 12 hours of sitting around.

Maybe I will start encouraging people to rejoin the military. Only stay long enough to go through school and get educated and then don't re-enlist once the contract is up.

Staying long enough to "go through school" would require at least 2 enlistements. Tuition assistance has an annual cap and it's not that much. You can use your GI Bill while on active duty but you'd be robbing yourself in most cases.
The better advice would be to go in to get specific training that's useful on the outside and relevant to the profession one wants as a civilian. Avoid long contracts where possible, the GI Bill requires 3 years of active duty time for 100% benefits, any more doesn't matter.

This is what I was trying to imply with the be smart on the entrance placement exam to "unlock" better paths like Nuclear Engineering, etc. Though I do agree with ya, just didn't communicate my thoughts well.

Nuclear engineering as far as I know tends to require a 6 year contract minimum.

Yeah, because it takes two years just to teach you enough to even be allowed near the reactor. The other four years are spent as basically an apprentice under the eyes of a guy who has been out there in reactor rooms for at least a decade. And maybe, if you're really talented, at the end of those four years you finally spend at sea they'll be generous and let you claim watch credit for being in charge as the chief engineer takes a nap rests his eyes in the corner. The USN is absolutely, ridiculously, almost unbelievably anal about reactor safety if not for it being obvious as to how bad things can go wrong if you aren't paying attention to what you're doing.

iirc you also need to have a degree in a relevant engineering field to even be considered as a nuke tech.
