Brits urged to swear oath to their king for first time

The Archbishop of Canterbury will call for a “chorus of millions” to recite a pledge of fealty to the UK monarchy

Next week’s coronation of King Charles III will feature an invitation for all British people to swear their allegiance to the new monarch and his descendants in what organizers have billed as a “chorus of millions.”
The ceremony has been revised to include a “homage of the people,” rather than the traditional “homage of peers” in which dukes pledge their allegiance to the sovereign, according to plans announced on Saturday by the Church of England.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will call upon “all persons of goodwill” in the UK and its territories – those attending the ceremony at Westminster Abbey and those watching on television or the internet – to recite the following vows: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty and to your heirs and successors according to the law, so help me God.” The archbishop will then proclaim, “God save the king” and ask all to respond: “God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the king live forever.”

The public pledge is among several tweaks to a ceremony with ancient traditions, some of which date back nearly half a millennium. “Our hope is at that point, when the archbishop invites people to join in, that people wherever they are, if they’re watching at home on their own, watching the telly, will say it out loud – this sense of a great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the king,” a Lambeth Palace spokesperson said.
Among other changes to the traditional ceremony, the coronation will feature female clergy taking a prominent role and leaders of other faiths presenting the king with regalia for the events, including his robe, ring and bracelets. A hymn will be sung in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic. The service will celebrate tradition while adding “new elements that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society,” the archbishop said.
However, King Charles III will take the traditional oaths, including a pledge to maintain “the Protestant Reformed religion.” The archbishop will preface the oath by saying that the Church of England will seek to foster an environment where “people of all faiths and beliefs may live freely.”

They have a lot more power than they do ‘officially.’
Its not power they can actually excersise in any meaningful capacity because if they try to actually bypass/subvert democracy they'll get deposed. This is a case where both sides have agreed to play pretend.

The public pretends that the monarchs have absolute power and the monarchs pretend they don't.

The fact that the monarchy has done its absolute best to disenfranchise all the hardcore traditionalists that weren't pretending hasn't helped them either.

Considering how careful Elizabeth was about her image I'm genuinely shocked she didn't groom, if not all her kids, at least her eldest son/grandson to not be an embarassing shitstain for when he'd innevitably need to take the throne and carry on the legacy of the royal family.
look what she named her kids, it was pretty obvious she only cared about herself, naming your first born Charles is like naming your son adolf but then raising him as the only christian in a jewish neighborhood, you literally are hoping he has a shitty life, he was her least well liked kid too.

she really hated him for being so artsy, the other kids loved athletics and edward is too lovable to hate. Charles was a redditor type born in a conservative military worshiping family. thats why i love how bad harry fucked him over, Charles was whining about needing to save the enviroment and be nicer to coloreds back in the 1970s. His love of british arts clearly not being reciprocated is great too. dumb fuck is reaping what hes been sowing. my only regret is he wasn't forced to do this in 2016, imagine the trump-chuck interactions plus chuck dealing with brexit, or him trying to do something about the migrant crisis.

Say what you will about the queen, a combination of her longevity and persona meant people liked her overall. being forced into the role at such a young age and having served in ww2 means she probably had a shitload of goodwill, even when people talked about destroying the monarchy they still liked her. A strong stable matriarch.

People are right about them being glorified mascots, but they do a lot of charity work, literally the only reason we know who Idris elba is, is directly because of King chuck raising money to allow him and other coloreds the chance to go to art school. Not that he's returned the favor. But they really are closer to lifetime civil servants, dedicated ribbon cutters and the like. Princess Anne mostly even drives herself, the cost is pretty much nil compared to what they pull in and do. people also seem to forget just by being upper class people who've been in the country for centuries that they own enough land and properties on their own that even without the monarchy they'd still be hanging around doing bullshit. think of them as a more blatantly tax payer funded version of those rich people foundations like the bill & melinda gates or soros foundation, where they do a fuckload for many causes but clearly aren't as psychopathic because they were taught not to spread their politics and spend their charitable donations on veterans and bullshit like that instead of on cancer filled vaccines.

Huh? Liz did it all the time, it's just rarely made public. Once in a while things leak, like her writing over her displeasure over a dumb law Canada was trying to pass - which then went away. She was really, really, really able to lay on the soft power. People said no to her about as often as they said no to Don Corleone in The Godfather, but it was all handled in private and carefully kept private.

You have child's understanding of the British establishment. They have a LOT of influence through their wealth and connections and a lot of protection by virtue of their role. c.v. The Man Who Never Sweats (i.e. Edward's relation with Epstein). The best power isn't wielded through the law, but through connections.

As to an oath of allegiance? Unless he is willing to personally lead me into battle waving a sword yelling "For England and God," no king is getting my fealty.

You can elaborate more on this? I know very very little about the drama surrounding the royal family.

You don't have to be a royal to have connections.

This is an inside Job, Charles works for the same group as his parents to weak the Norman kingdom so the Saxons can take back their historic land...

Do you people realy fell for the Windsor trick?

Royalty has extra perks, though. The military and the civil service swear their oath of loyalty to the crown, not to the state. There's enough of both that would follow the orders of the reigning monarch, over the orders of the government, to make any attempt at ignoring the king tricky, at best. The monarch is also titular head of the commonwealth, which although being officially ceremonial, is still a position of great power and influence. Far more influence than held by people with significantly greater wealth.

Sure, but if the crown tried to dissolve parliament tommorow or actually try to directly subvet any laws on the basis "I'm the king and I do what I want" while technically it does have the right to do so, there would be massive backlash both from the public and from all the officials that don't support them, not to mention an international incident and a republican surge among citizenry.

This isn't saudi arabia, the monarchy needs public support to have power and the only power they can actually excersise without losing public support is indirect.

Why does anyone give a shit about the British monarchy? They don't have any real power, or any power they have on paper doesn't exist since they can never actually use it. It's basically TMZ celebrity watch that an entire nation inexplicably participates in.
I think they still own a enormous ton of land which they use for political leverage.

I've already seen people comparing this to the pledge of allegliance in America and getting second hand seething from all that stuff, its been very entertaining.
The main differences is the US Pledge of Allegiance is pledging to a common concept. Whereas this one is declaring Allegiance to a Putz. A specific named individual Putz. It's like pledging your life and loyalty to DSP.

Bongland is now officially Lolcow, the nuclear armed nation stae.
