The other thing that sticks in my craw about this whole situation is that literally none of this would have happened if he just never made the Sam dock. Say what you will about his intentions with it, but I think the way he released it himself at least gave him an alibi for it being a hitpiece, if for nothing else, how passive aggressive and half-hearted it was. I think it's pretty obvious to all of us what the objective was with it initially, but there's at least the illusion of some kind of evenhandedness to the whole thing in its presentation.
That said, clearly Ian knew what he was getting into involving himself with Sam, he wouldn't have made the doc if he didn't already know he was a divisive and arguably toxic person. Hitpiece or not he had to know he was opening himself up to exposure to Sam and his fans, and some idea of what that would look like if he looked into his past content and the drama surrounding it at all.
My point is it's really bitchmade to poke what you can reasonably assume is a bear and then cry fowl when you get mauled.
