Maybe she doesn't want to move away from New York. She might have family there. Like her parents or someone else she cares about. The pay might be better in New York or finding a job is easier. The East and West coasts have always been the major industry hubs of the US. If you are going to find a job it will be there. Not in the middle of the country.

They also tend to be mostly white and poorer than other states. Meaning the pay there isn't that great. Sure she could get a lot of work as a nurse in Iowa but NY probably pays better.
