Probably an unpopular sentiment, but I'm sure Poast will be just fine after this. I haven't seen anything horrendous (I could be wrong, I didn't look too deep) or dox-worthy, save for the few tards who used .edu accounts.
A large portion of the users will probably just stop sending so many DMs or switch to another messaging service, and the loli admins will make a new account under a different name. The other large portion of users are Metokur fans who'll stick around as long as he does, and seeing how Jim doesn't seem to care about the leaks since it didn't affect him, he'll stay put (which is unfortunate, because Jim@cancer.hiv would be funnier).

There's a wild inconsistency in what was recovered. It either means the hack was incomplete like Chudbuds and is being passed off as fully successful, or graf has a weird-ass data retention policy. Some banned users are clean, other users look like they're talking to themselves (other half of convo missing), others transferred instances or deleted their account but everything is still there.

Could it be related to defederated instances that he unlinked from it like kiwifarms.cc? Not sure at all how poast works only used it when we had updates there on the sites status.

It could be related to a Pleroma maintenance task that prunes remote objects older than x number of days (90 days by default). Basically removes the post content and replaces it with a reference so it has to be refetched from the remote side when accessed. The DM admin API probably tries to proactively fetch these references but if the remote side is unavailable, it just leaves you with a one sided convo.

Users can still talk to each other directly even if instances are defederated in the usual manner so it's probably not due to that.

At a certain point in ~2017 I noticed someone had registered with a .govt.au account (socialist hospital employee) and found a bunch of people had also used .edu emails. If you try to register with an email containing "gov" "edu" or "ac.uk" (UK's .edu) you will get an error calling you a retard. I forced all those users to change their emails and the ones I couldn't get a hold of I just removed the email from and locked.

I didn't get called a retard for using an .edu e-mail, I am deeply disappointed.

Fair enough. For the discrepancies in the DM leak at least, I'm starting to think that's simply due to how the Fediverse operates when it comes to communication across different nodes. Everything sent by a user on Poast, whether they have since moved or deleted their account, is still in the system which while highly retarded on Graf's end does make sense from a technical standpoint. Banning a user might come with the option to purge their DM data so not to continue hosting potentially illicit material on their database. The same can be said for cross-node DMs, being that if Poast defederated an instance, there may be the option to purge all data on their database sent by users from that node to Poast users in DM. Of course this is all going off what others have said regarding the DM leaks because even though it's all plain text, there's no way I'm downloading that shit even on a VM.
