Graduating High School and then living at home & going to community college would certainly have some downsides to it. His parents (at least the father) were college educated and they had money to send him to a college.
The reasons someone like him would typically end up in Community College are either that he was an academic disaster in high school or that his parents didn't initially trust him living away from home.

No diss to community colleges or people who go to them intended. Nick would probably have done better initially in life learning something useful at a community college versus going to a state college for a creative writing degree as he did.
