Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Sigh poor owl house. The setup had potential and I kinda liked luz. Before the show revealed she was a little gremlin who shoved dead animals in other kids faces, and especially before she was redesigned to look like a girl who loiters in a starbucks all day before tweeting how mean the staff are being to the black customers.

Honestly I'm not even angry at it...just disappointed. Disappointment can speak for a lot of modern animation especially from the house of mouse.

From pepper Ann and the weekenders to...well what we have now.

On a less grim note. Pepper Ann was the only character from Disney TV animation to ever appear in house of mouse as a cameo unfortunately.

That means no appearances where ever made or planned for the kids in recess, Kim possible, teacher's pet, or even the poached from nickelodeon doug. Still house of mouse was a great show in its run. I honestly am glad it's unlikey Disney will reboot it anytime soon. I can only imagine the agenda pushing they'd do with the characters they have now. It's a double edged sword really. Thinking of the old guard mingling with the new. Hell you know would be really shocking

Mickey: hey if it isn't luz and amity on a date I presume?

Luz: oh no we're not actually...like that.

Amity: yeah it's just how the script was written and we rolled with it we're actually here to meet boys.

Dear God can you imagine the meltdowns by retard shippers, troons, and coomers? Hey I can dream can't I?

Is unicorn eternal a good pick for this year
It's already on episode 5 and it's ok but not nearly as captivating as Primal. The show is a lot more melodrama than action and the pacing is a bit slow for my taste. The big conflict so far is the ethics of these ancient heroes possessing and body stealing strangers to fight the bad guy, as this re-incarnation cycle one of the hosts is fighting back.

Heard a lot of mixed opinions on the art style. It's trying to look like old Popeye and Max Fleischer era cartoons and some say it clashes with the action and serious tone. Personally it's nice to see this style used outside of a retro callback but some scenes do look off and takes getting used to.

I think the latest ep is the best just because we get more plot development and world building, but I would still say this is Genndy's most underwhelming show so far.

The song Christmas kids by roar is getting remixed for shorts on tiktok/youtube with either the lorax. Despicable me, or south park. On the one hand it's a good song and the south park edits tend to be creative using the boys grown up forms from the covid specials.

on the other hand, how is the lorax STILL living on through memes? it's over a decade old and unlike despicable me wasn't milked and marketed for years, just a few months till the novelty wore off.

To me the biggest issue with the art style is the eyelashes. They really love to add strong and/or long eye lashes on characters not as a femine design touch but as an emoting thing. To be clear the characters don't have these eyelashes all the time, it's not part of their general design but they pop on often. I think they are trying to mimic shojo anime where characters just have intensive gazes emphasized with beautiful detailed eyes including the lashes but the generally simple style doesn't allow that. Eyelashes end up eating many serious scenes because there is disconnect with the visual and the general mood of the moment.

In general in western animation manly or neutral characters don't get fem eyelashes unless it's meant to be comical in some manner. They are being cheeky, acting out character, being childish, in love, trying lie, about to cry their eyes out or overly detailed gross-out frame. Basically it's a sign of something special you should pay attention to but not take seriously. Detailed eyelashes just on generic moment in fight scene or in a serious look as your friend runs away after being over whelmed? No, it doesn't match so I get this mixed message feeling that takes me out of story.

I personally liked Pepper Ann's appearance in The Sopranos

oh jeez, this show looks gross
Whatever it's trying to do, it's failing hard at
I'm certain the animation is fluid and expressive, but these stills look really bad
(agree on the shojo thing though)

To be fair I chose less flattering screenshots to demonstrate my issue. The show can look fine, for the most part it does despite having some serious issues like the eyelashes. There are multiple scenes that are framed and animated really well with good designs and storytelling.

I'll take your word for it, because I don't love these screenshots either haha
I think it might be the colors, they're just not my thing at all

Completely fair. I'm not a big fan of Genndy Tartakovsky's style in general and this isn't even his best looking show. I totally get why the art can be a deal braker because it's almost to me.

I still want to give out an honest picture because it's not awful. There are direction, consistency and competency present in the art and animation. The characters have weight and shape, there are regularly different camera angles, the action scenes are readble, visual jokes aren't explained and so on. It's not generic flat mess I see too much in the current year western animation.

I just don't want to give the wrong idea from my eyelash rant, there is more to the show's art. The issues are big enough that I find them distracting but doesn't prevent me from watching the episodes once. Someone else might not mind them as much or mind them more.

Oh God I just realized the kids who grew up with The Lorax movie are now entering adulthood, and they're finding things to meme beyond The Onceler self-cest that made it infamous on Tumblr and DeviantArt (and left enough of an impact to make it Internet history).

I miss House of Mouse so much, it's very classic Mickey Mouse, and I really liked Mickey Mouse the character, especially from that era. Disney doesn't deserve him anymore. It's insane to me that they never put HoM on Disney+ or anything, it's very much a classic Disney show, in a good way.

Nah you've just got to literally find the self-produced indie animator now.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hzmZSxxaUJE
Self funded indie animation is dead, it died in 2014 when youtube tied money to watchtime and the big tech cabal cracked down on flash. Animation in general is a real dead fucking end, its a horrible job for both the overwork and underpay. Animators have 0 job security, its literally just hire and fire per content contract, worse than IT, once your content is produced youre out of a job. I dropped studying animation just cause of all this. Unless you do porn, even in which case youtube communist video essayists earn 4 times you do, you cant survive in the animation industry, both on the internet and professionally. And stop talking about starving animators living off ramen, you shouldnt have to starve just cause you like being an animator.

Just most of everything is dead with only some (emphasis on some btw) diamonds under the bottom of the mountain of rough.
