Too Many Malicious Droppers on Daily Kos - Just for shits and giggles. Point and laugh. Schadenfreude.

Original (Archive)

I have found myself typing something similar to this multiple times in response to the “Get an Ads Blocker”, “Just subscribe already”, etc on this Post. I am going to just leave it here as an update, hoping that it will be seen by anyone else who wants to provide same “advice”. Thank you

I have been a Lifetime DKos Subscriber for, like, forever. TYVM

You get to choose to see Ads, even as a lifetime Subscriber.

I consciouly chose that option. Why? After 18 years years, I have come to see DKos as MY Project. I know that DKos cannot survive on Susbscriptions and occassional fund-raising.

I have opted to help DKos augment its revenues through Ads. I am doing right by DKos. By choice.

I whitelist DKos from Ads Blocking. Consciously. By choice. Because I want DKos to earn that Ads revenue.

In turn, I get to ask DKos to do right by me and other Members. Especially those who can’t afford to Subscribe, or don’t know that Subcription is an option.

To protect its reputation as a go-to Platform for anyone and everyone interested in Progressive politics, news, topics and communities, DKos has to ensure that its visitors (even the occassional ones) are protected. It can’t be known as the Site infested with computer “fleas” and gremlins.

It is not endearing to say “Don’t want malicious Ads dropping germs all over your device? Just pay up and you will be safe”.

I am very glad that the people to whom I addressed the Post (DKos Management and Technical Staff) have accepted that this is, indeed, a problem. I am encouraged by their promise to investigate and remediate.
Thanks to everyone who read, commented and rec’d it, thiis Post has served its intended purpose. There is no need for me (or anyone) to flog the issue again.

Yes, I get it. I get to enjoy the news, post, camaraderie and company of my Daily Kos community and friends because the Management works its ass off to keep the Servers up and the lights on. I get it.

I get that these things don’t come cheap. That money doesn’t fall from heaven. That bills have to get paid. That Adverts is inarguably a proven, reliable source of revenue for independent outlets and communities like Daily Kos. That, the more eyeballs, impressions and clicks an Ad generates on a site, the larger the payout, and, correspondingly, the more assured I can be that Daily Kos will be there for me to jump onto tomorrow, when I need my daily dose of sanity and reality-based news, opinions, commentaries and, yes, pie fights.

Here comes the “however” (thanks for waiting so long)… at what cost? At what cost to the security of our devices? At what cost to the safety of the information we store on those devices? At what cost to our privacy? And sanity?

For a long time now, I have tried to ignore these security warnings triggered by several of the Ads (and their embedded nefarious codes) served on Daily Kos, but it occurs to me that, while (as a technology-savvy individual) I can take steps to protect myself, how does this impact others who can’t tell a Dropper from a Teardrop?

Daily Kos is taking adverts from unscrupulous advertisers whose malicious codes do more than just pitch us something to buy from them. And this needs to stop. Daily Kos needs to do better. It needs to take steps to ensure that its community members are not maliciously exploited, as it seeks to generate enough money to cater to their needs. It is the least DK Management can do. And, it is all I’m asking for.

It is not a favor, really. Because, the alternative is for the community members to start taking individual actions to protect themselves if DK won’t do it. Such “self-service” (e.g. blanket script blockers) will, in turn, hurt DK’s ability to generate the needed funds from Ads, leading to belt-tightening and, eventually, attritions. We don’t want that.

Daily Kos Management and Technical Staff, please do better. Screen out these malicious advertisers. For our collective benefit and safety.

We're reaching levels of soy that shouldn't even be possible.

Also, who edited this garbage? If you're going to tighten your belts, start with that guy.

694 words to say "malware ads are bad". The Prophet himself PBUH couldn't be this much of a self-righteous wanker.

I always use adblocker. I have been using it for years. I remember when the only browser that could block ads was FireFox with the ABP (Ad Block Plus) addon. I use Fire Fox for years because of that. I think IE eventually got an adblocker as well. Once that happened I switched back to IE as my daily use browser and Fire Fox went back to being a backup. Adblock is one of the best things to happen for the internet. People who don't remember what the internet was like before adblocking it was just a mess of adds. It would slow down your internet as well. Making browsing a site difficult and slow. I remember because I was still using dial up in the mid and part of the late 2000's. The ads all over the place and this was dialup so it was already not the greatest way to browse the modern internet in those days. The only time I got to use anything faster than dialup was when I was high school in the early 2000's or when I went to the local library and used the computers there.

Daily Kos has been notorious for malware infested ads for at least a decade, if not longer. You would probably be safer browsing early 2000s Russian warez sites. The owner knowingly uses sketchy ad services because it pays better and has never given a solitary fuck about his userbase or anybody unfortunate enough to click on his garbage blog farm without ad or script blockers. I can't imagine how delusional or retarded these people have to be to have used the site this long and not realize it isn't an accident.

The headline reads like the instruction booklet of an 80s video game.

On Level 3, you will encounter tougher enemies, like the Malicious Droppers on Kos.

Getting a blue screen from an ad on a major website over a decade ago is what got me to start using adblockers, and I haven't gone back. Fuck ads and fuck the websites that push ads so hard.
