Yesterday, Tim LaHaye died of a stroke at his home in San Diego at the age of 90.

His was an author of religious themed sci-fi, his most well-known works being the "Left Behind" series which has been adapted to movies several times, the most recent one staring Nicolas Cage.

You can read more here.

They're not incredibly bad or incredibly good books, they just went on for too long. They went from the Tribulation and Rapture, which was supposed to be the overarching plot of the series - thus "Left Behind" - to the Kingdom of God.

They should have ended when the Antichrist died at the hands of Jesus, tbh.

And don't get me started on the prequel shit, either.

They also should have been able to compress it into half the books they made.

I thought there were two authors for that series?

The ending was as follows:
Jesus loves true believers. He'll save you.

And "Jesus will commit genocide against everyone who isn't a hardcore Bible-thumper and torture them afterward for all eternity because they didn't believe he existed or didn't think that he was divine/the son of God." That's a big aspect of the Book of Revelation. That's a recurring thing with fundamentalists and extremists, though, the refusal of accepting anyone else's basic humanity.

That reminds me, I need to try to get through Left Behind. I tried to read the first book, but it was still pretty damn preachy early in, so I tapped out. However, I think it's important to read everything possible, good and bad.

I'm also curious to see how they are going to go about the Apocalypse story. A lot of people claim to read the Book of Revelation, but what I've noticed is that those who make a story based off of it get so many basic parts wrong, I am absolutely baffled and/or amused at their lack of reading comprehension. Especially since the Book of Revelation has a book curse at the end- if you add or subtract to events, that's supposed to make the events of the Apocalypse worse. Considering how hardcore the guy was, if he changed details around, I'd be amused. I may not believe in book curses, but he certainly should in relation to the Bible.

They tend to ignore that detail. They also tend to ignore that Revelation is more than likely an allegory for things that were happening when John of Patmos was writing the book - the Beast is the Emperor of Rome, for instance.

:powerlevel:I remember when I was a kid overhearing some religious adults talking about the Left Behind series and the plot of it and I was like "Jesus Christ is the bad guy?". The concept of Jesus taking away millions of people from their loved ones seemed evil. And they were flabbergasted and were like "no, no because [reasons]" before dismissing me as being too young to understand the concept. Even as an adult the concept of the rapture still seems diabolical; separating people from loved ones while allowing those not fit for the cool club to suffer for all eternity. I never read the book, although I have a copy collecting dust until I get bored enough to read although it sounds like it would not cure that boredom.

As for the author, RIP dude.

He had Klan level views of Catholics. Fuck him.

Catholics, gays, women, non fundie protestants, atheists, jews, muslims, people who dont reject basic science.... and justified it all with "MUHRELIGION!" while simultaneously pissing all over any part of the bible that did not fit his personal headcanon

Yeah. Im glad he is currently being violently sodomized for eternity in Cthulhu's personal sex dungeon. Nothing worse than a hypocritical little demagogue who makes a living by selling fear to idiots.

I don't know much about these books beyond the crappy film adaptations, the repeated parodies, and the one time I heard the main villian was the secretary general to the United Nations; to this day I find completely ridiculous.

I am sure Kirk Cameron will carry on his legacy even though no one knows who he is anymore
Even LaHaye tossed Kirk Cameron's birthday party invitations into a flaming can of garbage used by the local homeless for heat.

I got a set of the first seven books from my grandma as a gift. I tried reading the first book, but it was so depressing and boring that I lost interest. I think I sold them with a bunch of other books to a half-price bookstore. Good riddance.

Thank you for not posting spoilers. I'm at the part where the Romans are flagellating Jesus and it's pretty intense. I'm not worried that he'll die though; after all, he's the main character!

But yeah, these books suck. If you're interested in seeing Left Behind get torn to shreds, there's a blog that goes through each of the chapters and talks about how wrong they are. It's really interesting because the blog is actually written by an evangelical Christian, the target demographic of Left Behind. But instead of agreeing with it, he talks about how badly the series misunderstands and misrepresents Christianity.
