reddit General

The worst part of this reddit blackout is hearing my soyjack coworkers geek out about it all day. Apollo, and all other 3rd party apps are parasites to Reddit and it makes total sense for Reddit to charge them. They have already walked back API pricing for any accessibility apps, said they are working with 3rd party apps that actively want to work with them and are granting free API access to modding tools. I listened to the logs with Apollo and frankly, he sounded really bad there and I think he spat at a gift horse.

I hate Reddit and haven't actively used the platform since whenever the donald was taken down and Spez started editing comments. But they are totally in their right to do these moves, they are getting sucked dry by 3rd party apps and AI scarping every day they don't incorporate these changes. If they want to make money, which right now they don't, this had to end and end ASAP. What else do you expect them to do, continue to tank money for their tankie users who will never show them a dime of support? These 3rd party apps have been given a free ride for a close to a decade, being able to place ads and charge for their service while simply leeching off of Reddit's userbase and content.

The whole thing is absurd and when I watch subs like bimbohypno go private I am only reminded Reddit is a plague on society.
Actually, I take back what I said to start this; the real worst part is that reddit isn't going down for good.

I don't really understand any of this, reddit wants to use an app that makes it harder for some of their users, so the jannies decide to shut down the site for everyone, step 3 profit? Do I have it right?
It's just peak slacktivism, the type that Reddit users really pioneered.

The right move would be for upset users to try and move to one of the endless Reddit alternatives, but instead they sit on Reddit, a site that doesn't care about them, while throwing a tantrum.

Redditors really believe this zero effort move will convince an unprofitable company that is in debt during a time of rising interest rates with a dead in the water IPO, crashing valuation, and VCs who expect a return on investment to reverse course. The users don't actually understand the situation Reddit is in and are doing the only thing they know how, being fucking insufferable.

This should hopefully be the last blackout before reddit gets their own AI mods. Imagine if the IPO HAD happened and mods could theoretically hold the entire site to ransom over the tiniest thing.

Also the peak kino thing for reddit to do right now is ban every single NSFW board that has blacked out. We all know once the IPO happens (if it does) that NSFW content will be the first against the wall, so why not shoot them in the head while they've already taken themselves out?

Speaking of which, I bring you this cursed screenshot.

Using a third party app suggests to me that you browse Reddit for long periods, which is honestly baffling to me: Isn’t the whole concept of this webshite based on sharing and discussing opinions? Why exactly is there an app for this in the first place, let alone different clients?
The reddit mobile app and web client are absolutely dog shit. new.reddit is generally bad as it's slow and constantly prompts you to login if you want to view past the first page of a subreddit while old.reddit doesn't have a mobile interface. There was a lack of supply for mobile reddit clients, and independent devs filled the demand. As per usual with capitalism, multiple competitors for the apps arose

Reddit already has AI mods that can read the text and make a decision on the user.

The problem is they can't identify bots that other users can and just keep approving those posts.

I saw a YouTube video of this blackout thing in my recommendations. Then read couple of comments, which made it seem like internet was shutting down and shit like that. I come here the check what the fuck is going on and find out that the whole situation is reddit retardation like always.

I don't know why they think 2 days is going to change everything. Firstly its too little time to do actually any damage and the only people this is going to affect is redditors, who aren't going anywhere.

They overestimate what two days are to normies, a lot of users will just not notice it.

Just conceptually this is already a bad idea, the incentive is just not there.

Even if Reddit Inc. felt threatened by two days of outage they would not really be able to act fast enough and as soon as it's over their is no reason to change anything.

Not too mention the know that the people who are invested enough to care about that are also too invested to quit for a longer amount of time.

According to hackernudes reddit is ALSO falling over https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36294244 (a)

(Hackernudes itself is falling over because of all the redditfuges)

See also https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/12/23758002/reddit-crashing-api-protest-subreddit-private-going-dark (a):

According to Reddit, the blackout is responsible for the problems. “A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt tells The Verge.
shit is programmed so badly that the check if a subreddit is private is probably overwhelming whatever hamstercage they have running it, what a shit site

Did you see any where subs said they wouldn't go private and just got downvoted and chastised by le Redditors for it? Or any comments where some peasant dared disagree with the blackout and was similarly flogged by their fellow Redditors
For both (kinda), we have the Switch subreddit!

Not going to bother archiving, but prime slacktivism at display here. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I've also found that people really don't want the attention on the manga subreddit so they're not participating (A).

They also don't care about alternatives. (A)

I have seen the opposite response, where subs deciding to "go dark" posting a statement and locking comments.
I have not actually seen any of those before the blackouts, guess I just wasn't looking hard enough.

Some Christian company bought some milquetoast advertisements on reddit where they explicitly express the notions of anti-racism and inclusivity.
Of course, the Jews are screeching:

Racism: negative discrimination based on appearance
Racism in practice: a "get out of jail free" card for anyone holding a narcissist accountable for their malicious actions against their current scapegoat regardless of physical characteristics.

Remember Jesus threw the money changers out of his father's temple with violence and ass kicking. Not pacifism.

No big surprise here. You can bet your ass that an average normie's perception of the internet will be limited to seven sites/resources/portals at most, and all of them either belong to the Silicon Valley duumvirate, or are TikTok. So North Korean intranet, basically.

Doesn't help that Reddit boldly describes itself as "the front page of the internet".

>ads all over the place, with countless more astroturfed ads that pass themselves off as real people
>any sub that mildly criticizes women, liberals or trannies is yeeted because the site users literally take it upon themselves to report you for no compensation
>make a single post on a no-no sub, shadowbanned from 12 other subs without so much as a message informing you
>uneven moderation, moderators of subs answer to effectively no one, paid staff aren't much better, your entire fate on the site is decided by whichever tranny that forgot to take his SSRIs
>troons invade every sub imaginable, staff lets it happen and even celebrates it
>updoots and karma make everything you say effectively invisible until you pay tribute to the wholesome 100 big changes gods
>every sub is word filtered, some subs autoban if you so much as say retard or cunt
>oblique shadowbans that require you to use other outsider tools to see if people can actually see what you're saying
>site has become effectively a hivemind, normie NPCs ensure you WILL live laugh and love or your posts will be removed
>you literally can't even tell if you're talking to a human or some ChatGPT AI abomination half the damn time

This is fine. Don't like it? Build your own reddit!

>reddit makes a tiny change to the interface that will bork certain third party apps

NOOOOO THIS IS LITERALLY GENOCIDE NOOOO DADDY DADDY STOP THE MEAN MAN REEEEEEEEEE

Are redditors unironically the dumbest niggers on the planet?
